                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Effie Pate Thomas will celebrate the momentous
    1-2  occasion of her 100th birthday on July 19, 1993, and to her many
    1-3  friends and relatives the event will indeed be a happy occasion
    1-4  that is worthy of special recognition; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The daughter of James Pate and Willie Medora
    1-6  Steward, Mrs. Thomas was born in the small town of Wills Point in
    1-7  Van Zandt County; her father, a rancher, bank officer, and frontier
    1-8  town marshall from Kentucky, overcame many obstacles to carve out a
    1-9  comfortable life for his family in this quaint East Texas
   1-10  community; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, With education a priority in her life, Mrs. Thomas
   1-12  earned her teacher certification from Normal College in
   1-13  Duncanville, and after teaching for a time, she moved to
   1-14  Washington, D.C., where she worked in various capacities in
   1-15  governmental offices; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Following the passing of her first husband, she
   1-17  returned to Texas and in 1925 married Mike Thomas II; together,
   1-18  their happiness was made complete with the birth of a son, Mike
   1-19  Thomas III in 1926, and eventually her close-knit family grew to
   1-20  include two grandsons, Scot and Kyle; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Of late, Mrs. Thomas has become quite a celebrity in
   1-22  her community; known for her fine cooking skills, she recently
   1-23  appeared with a number of other grandmothers in a commercial for
   1-24  Imperial Sugar; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, With a strong desire to enrich the lives of those
    2-2  around her, Mrs. Thomas continued to teach and tutor until the
    2-3  mid-1970s; blessed by the friendship of others, her extended
    2-4  "family" now includes many residents of the Christian Care Center
    2-5  in Mesquite, where she makes her home; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, The world has undergone dramatic transformations
    2-7  over the past century, and through it all, this gracious woman has
    2-8  touched the lives of many, bringing joy and delight to those who
    2-9  are privileged to know her; a much-loved member of the community,
   2-10  she is indeed deserving of special recognition on the occasion of
   2-11  her 100th birthday; now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-13  Legislature hereby congratulate Effie Pate Thomas on the joyous
   2-14  occasion of her 100th birthday and extend warmest best wishes to
   2-15  this lovely lady for her continued happiness; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-17  prepared for Mrs. Thomas as an expression of high regard by the
   2-18  Texas House of Representatives.
