R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, Don W. Daniel is retiring as band director at Bryan
1-2 Adams High School in Dallas, bringing to a close a distinguished
1-3 career in the field of music education that has spanned a rewarding
1-4 25 years; and
1-5 WHEREAS, A renowned artist, Mr. Daniel began his professional
1-6 career as a musician while still a senior in high school and in
1-7 recognition of his outstanding talents was awarded a scholarship to
1-8 the Jordan Conservatory of Music in Indianapolis; and
1-9 WHEREAS, After graduation, he pursued a full-time music
1-10 career, establishing a regional rhythm and blues band in the Great
1-11 Lakes area and recording for Falcon Records in Chicago; and
1-12 WHEREAS, An eminently successful performer, Mr. Daniel joined
1-13 the late Johnny "Scat" Davis in Austin in 1960 and traveled to
1-14 perform at numerous venues across the United States and in Canada
1-15 and the Far East; and
1-16 WHEREAS, He began his noteworthy career as an educator as a
1-17 substitute teacher, and in 1968 became a band instructor at Adelle
1-18 Turner, Mark Twain, Umphrey Lee, and Birdie Alexander elementary
1-19 schools in the Dallas Independent School District; and
1-20 WHEREAS, The following year he transferred to the district's
1-21 new D. A. Hulcy Junior High School, where he distinguished himself
1-22 as marching band director and capably served in that capacity for
1-23 several years; and
1-24 WHEREAS, Mr. Daniel began his association with Bryan Adams
2-1 High School as a conductor of stage band clinics and in 1974 was
2-2 named assistant band director; widely regarded for his outstanding
2-3 musical abilities and utmost dedication to his students, he was
2-4 promoted to director three years later and has ably served in that
2-5 position since that time; and
2-6 WHEREAS, Under Mr. Daniel's superb leadership the Bryan Adams
2-7 High School Band has achieved national eminence, thrilling and
2-8 delighting audiences across the country with its excellent
2-9 musicianship and showmanship with performances at the Astrodome,
2-10 Texas Stadium, the Orange Bowl, Buccaneer Stadium, and RFK Stadium;
2-11 and
2-12 WHEREAS, The band has earned many prestigious accolades and
2-13 has received first-division rankings in 13 out of 15 of the
2-14 district's band evaluations; the band also was rated above-average
2-15 in all University Interscholastic League band competitions; and
2-16 WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Daniel has
2-17 remained active in numerous professional, social, and community
2-18 service organizations; a former president of the Phi Mu Alpha
2-19 professional musicians' fraternity and a valued member of the
2-20 American Federation of Musicians since 1952, he also is a charter
2-21 member of the Dallas Jazz Orchestra and has performed with the
2-22 Wilshire Baptist Church Wind Ensemble and the Bravura Wind
2-23 Ensemble; and
2-24 WHEREAS, He has contributed his keen insight and expertise as
2-25 an esteemed member of several professional teachers' organizations,
2-26 including the Bryan Adams PTA, the Classroom Teachers of Dallas,
2-27 the Texas State Teachers' Association, the National Education
3-1 Association, the Dallas Music Educators' Association, and the Texas
3-2 Music Educators' Association; and
3-3 WHEREAS, Mr. Daniel is a dedicated professional who has
3-4 diligently worked to improve the quality of education in his
3-5 community; he has been a life-shaping influence on his students,
3-6 and it is appropriate that he be honored on the occasion of his
3-7 retirement; now, therefore, be it
3-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
3-9 Legislature hereby congratulate Don W. Daniel for his outstanding
3-10 public service as a band director and extend to him best wishes for
3-11 a happy and rewarding retirement; and, be it further
3-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-13 prepared for Mr. Daniel as an expression of high regard by the
3-14 Texas House of Representatives.
