H.R. No. 695
                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The life of Gustavo "Gus" Gutierrez, Jr., which had
    1-2  brought so much joy and happiness into the lives of others, ended
    1-3  all too soon with his death on April 9, 1993, and his passing has
    1-4  deeply saddened the members of his family and his many friends; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, While mourning the loss of this dedicated son,
    1-6  brother, and friend, Mr. Gutierrez's loved ones can find solace in
    1-7  the knowledge that he is not alone but is with his truest love,
    1-8  Judy Cordero; engaged to be married in May, they were seldom apart
    1-9  in this life, and they died as they had lived, together, to be
   1-10  united forever in eternal life; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, The oldest of four sons, Mr. Gutierrez was pursuing
   1-12  a degree in education at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP),
   1-13  and his goal was to become a bilingual education teacher; he was
   1-14  determined to become the first member of his family to earn a
   1-15  university degree, and by endeavoring to fulfill such a noble
   1-16  ambition, he set an admirable example for his brothers to emulate;
   1-17  and
   1-18        WHEREAS, He was encouraged in his academic pursuits by Miss
   1-19  Cordero, who also was studying bilingual education at UTEP; her
   1-20  passion for teaching inspired him to follow the same calling, and
   1-21  together they hoped to make a real and lasting difference in the
   1-22  lives of their students; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, This committed young man gained his first classroom
   1-24  experience as a substitute teacher at Montana Vista Elementary
    2-1  School, and he immediately won the respect and admiration of his
    2-2  young students, who eagerly looked forward to his visits to their
    2-3  classroom; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The enthusiasm and spirit these esteemed individuals
    2-5  displayed in the classroom were evident in all areas of their
    2-6  lives, and their deaths touched many people throughout the El Paso
    2-7  community; more than 2,000 friends and neighbors gathered to pray
    2-8  the rosary and attend services for Mr. Gutierrez and Miss Cordero,
    2-9  and flags were lowered to half-mast at each of the schools they
   2-10  attended; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, Although it is especially painful to say goodbye to
   2-12  one so young and so full of promise, it is fitting to remember that
   2-13  while Mr. Gutierrez's time here was brief, his life had a profound
   2-14  effect on those around him; the extraordinary relationship he
   2-15  shared with Miss Cordero was an inspiration to all who were
   2-16  privileged to know them, and the legacy of that love will live on
   2-17  in the memories of the many people whose lives he touched; now,
   2-18  therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-20  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Gustavo "Gus"
   2-21  Gutierrez, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his
   2-22  family:  to his parents, Gustavo and Elvira Gutierrez; to his
   2-23  brothers, Raul, Paul, and Billy; and to all the many friends and
   2-24  family of this beloved young man; and, be it further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-26  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
   2-27  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
    3-1  Gustavo "Gus" Gutierrez, Jr.
