                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  Sue Edwards for her significant contributions toward preserving the
    1-3  rich heritage of her community in the recently published book,
    1-4  Galena Park:  The Community That Shaped its Own History; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, A native of the community, the former Frances Sue
    1-6  Elkins is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Houston
    1-7  who was selected as the school's outstanding business student and
    1-8  who later went on to earn master's degrees in business education
    1-9  and vocational guidance and counseling; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, After raising her son, Michael Douglas, and
   1-11  contributing to the many activities in which he was involved,
   1-12  Ms. Edwards accepted a position as a vocational guidance counselor
   1-13  with the Galena Park Independent School District and is credited by
   1-14  many former students as the person who helped them to become
   1-15  successful and productive members of society; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, This admirable woman began a lifelong commitment to
   1-17  community service at an early age, volunteering as Galena Park
   1-18  coordinator for the March of Dimes town walk and the Muscular
   1-19  Dystrophy Carnivals for North Shore and Galena Park; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Throughout the years, she has shared her time and
   1-21  energies to benefit numerous organizations in her community,
   1-22  including the Galena Park Council of PTAs, the MacArthur, Galena
   1-23  Park Middle School, and Galena Park High School PTAs, the Galena
   1-24  Park Baseball Auxiliary, the Galena Park Riding Club, and the State
    2-1  Future Homemakers of America; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Active in her church, Our Lady of Fatima, she also
    2-3  is a contributing member of several women's organizations in town
    2-4  and has served as the mistress of ceremonies for the Miss Galena
    2-5  High Pageant for nearly two decades; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Ms. Edwards has earned many well-deserved accolades
    2-7  for her achievements, including being listed in Notable Women of
    2-8  Texas and Who's Who of American Business Women, named Business
    2-9  Woman of the Year by the North Channel Area Chamber of Commerce and
   2-10  Galena Park's Lady of the Year, and selected to serve as the editor
   2-11  of a number of university, metropolitan, and business newsletters;
   2-12  and
   2-13        WHEREAS, By leading the effort to document the history of her
   2-14  hometown, Sue Edwards has enabled many residents to more fully
   2-15  appreciate their heritage, and her exceptional contributions as a
   2-16  historian and civic leader are indeed deserving of special
   2-17  legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-19  Legislature hereby commend Sue Edwards for her efforts to preserve
   2-20  the history of Galena Park for future generations and for her many
   2-21  years of outstanding service to her community; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-23  prepared for Ms. Edwards as an expression of high regard by the
   2-24  Texas House of Representatives.
