H.R. No. 701 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Joyce Irene "Joy" Garrett on February 1-2 11, 1993, at the age of 47, has deeply saddened the many friends, 1-3 relatives, and admirers of this beloved vocalist and actress; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born March 2, 1945, in Dallas, to Clarence 1-5 A. Garrett and Kathleen Davis Garrett, she captivated audiences as 1-6 a young girl, displaying exceptional singing ability by age four 1-7 and winning the "Little Miss Fort Worth" pageant; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Her outstanding talent and beauty assured this 1-9 vivacious individual continued success as a pageant contestant, 1-10 garnering her the "Miss Fort Worth" and "Miss Colorado Springs" 1-11 titles and a second runner up finish in the "Miss Texas" pageant; 1-12 and 1-13 WHEREAS, A graduate of Amon G. Carter Riverside High School, 1-14 she received a scholarship to attend Texas Wesleyan University and 1-15 was graduated from that fine institution with honors; during her 1-16 college years Ms. Garrett's considerable dramatic abilities 1-17 blossomed with leading roles in several musicals; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Relocating to New York City to attend the American 1-19 Academy of Dramatic Arts, this show-stopping entertainer soon was 1-20 lighting up the Broadway stage with her vibrant voice in numerous 1-21 musicals, including Grease, The Candy Apple, and Silver Queen; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Also a gifted performer in non-singing roles, 1-23 Ms. Garrett brought her special presence to such popular television 1-24 programs as Night Court, Three's Company, Magnum P.I., Ball Four, 2-1 The Hoyt Axton Show, and Benson; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Her greatest success came in daytime television 2-3 where, after appearing as a regular on The Young and the Restless, 2-4 she created the memorable character Jo Johnson on Days of Our 2-5 Lives; in addition to winning the hearts of millions of viewers, 2-6 she also won a well-deserved Soap Opera Award as best supporting 2-7 actress in a daytime drama for her performance in this role; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Joy Garrett was a woman of rare warmth and talent 2-9 whose exceptional gifts imbued each of her performances with 2-10 radiance and vitality; although her presence is gone from us now, 2-11 her remarkable spirit will live on in the hearts of the millions 2-12 whose lives she enriched; now, therefore, be it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-14 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Joyce Irene "Joy" 2-15 Garrett and extend sincere sympathy to her parents, Clarence 2-16 A.
