H.R. No. 718
                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor
    1-2  an outstanding student and Laredo resident, Melissa Medina, on her
    1-3  recent nomination for the United States Border Patrol Youth of the
    1-4  Year award; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, A popular and talented senior at J. W. Nixon High
    1-6  School in Laredo, Ms. Medina is one of the top 10 students in her
    1-7  class and excels at her studies, particularly in math and science,
    1-8  in which areas she is enrolled in gifted and talented courses; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, She also finds time for many extracurricular
   1-10  activities, including the National Honor Society and the NASA
   1-11  Science Club; in addition, she has been involved in University
   1-12  Interscholastic League math, science, number sense, and calculator
   1-13  competition throughout her high school career, and she recently won
   1-14  first place overall in the 1993 Laredo Independent School District
   1-15  Science Fair; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The deserving recipient of the Naval Achievement
   1-17  Award, this remarkable young woman also placed first at the
   1-18  National Engineering Design Challenge and has been chosen to
   1-19  represent her region at the International Science Fair in
   1-20  Mississippi; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, In addition, she has been selected as student of the
   1-22  year at J. W. Nixon High School by the League of United Latin
   1-23  American Citizens; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, An enthusiastic participant in the summer Upward
    2-1  Bound math and science programs and the Tex-Prep Engineering
    2-2  Program, she also has generously shared her time with a number of
    2-3  worthy civic organizations, including the American Cancer Society,
    2-4  the March of Dimes, and the Children's Museum, and is active in the
    2-5  Catholic Church; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Ms. Medina plans to attend The University of Texas
    2-7  at Austin to earn bachelor's and master's degrees and to continue
    2-8  her education at Harvard University or the Massachusetts Institute
    2-9  of Technology to earn a doctorate in mechanical engineering, which
   2-10  she hopes to put to good use after returning to Laredo and opening
   2-11  her own engineering firm; to date, she has earned two scholarships,
   2-12  the Texas Achievement Award Scholarship and the D. D. Hachar Fund
   2-13  Scholarship, that will aid her in making this dream become a
   2-14  reality; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, Throughout her schooling, Ms. Medina has received
   2-16  the loving support of her parents, Jesus and Maria Medina, who have
   2-17  provided her with unfailing encouragement and are justifiably proud
   2-18  of her achievements, as are her sister, Vanessa, and the faculty
   2-19  and her fellow students at J. W. Nixon High School; and
   2-20        WHEREAS, A truly outstanding young woman, she has attained
   2-21  notable success in all her endeavors and is indeed deserving of
   2-22  special praise and legislative recognition on the occasion of her
   2-23  latest honor; now, therefore, be it
   2-24        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-25  Legislature hereby congratulate Melissa Medina on her nomination as
   2-26  Youth of the Year by the United States Border Patrol and extend
   2-27  sincere best wishes to her for continued success as she pursues her
    3-1  goals; and, be it further
    3-2        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-3  prepared for Ms. Medina as an expression of high regard by the
    3-4  Texas House of Representatives.
