H.R. No. 719 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to honor 1-2 four outstanding Texas math students who recently won second place 1-3 in the national MATHCOUNTS competition that was held in Washington, 1-4 D.C., on April 30, 1993; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Team members Richard Chiburis of Memorial Middle 1-6 School in Houston, Darrick Chang of Kealing Junior High School in 1-7 Austin, Joey Liaw of St. John's School in Houston, and Andres 1-8 Perez-Bergquist of Murchison Middle School in Austin, are to be 1-9 commended for their excellent performance as is their fine coach, 1-10 Patricia Rossman of Kealing Junior High School, for her hard work 1-11 in guiding these talented students; and 1-12 WHEREAS, MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to 1-13 encourage junior high school students to improve their math skills 1-14 and explore the many exciting and challenging career opportunities 1-15 available in the fields of math, science, and technology; and 1-16 WHEREAS, MATHCOUNTS coaches help participating 1-17 students--called "mathletes"--to build problem-solving and 1-18 analytical skills through a challenging and fun series of math 1-19 contests that culminate with a national competition each spring; 1-20 and 1-21 WHEREAS, Sponsors of this worthwhile program include the 1-22 National Society of Professional Engineers, the CNA Insurance 1-23 Companies, the Cray Research Foundation, the General Motors 1-24 Foundation, Texas Instruments Incorporated, the National Council of 2-1 Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Aeronautics and Space 2-2 Administration; and 2-3 WHEREAS, More than three million students, nationally and 2-4 abroad, have participated in MATHCOUNTS since its inception in 2-5 1983, and the program has flourished under the direction of its 2-6 honorary chairman, Robert B. Lane, the president of NationsBank of 2-7 Texas, and received praise from the president of the United States 2-8 and the secretary of education, as well as many other prominent 2-9 leaders and organizations; and 2-10 WHEREAS, These fine students and their coach have brought 2-11 great pride to their schools and the State of Texas through their 2-12 success in national competition and they are indeed deserving of 2-13 high praise and special legislative recognition for their recent 2-14 accomplishment; now, therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-16 Legislature hereby congratulate the Texas MATHCOUNTS Team and Coach 2-17 Patricia Rossman for the team's outstanding showing at the national 2-18 MATHCOUNTS competition this year and extend to them sincere best 2-19 wishes for continued success in the future; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-21 prepared for each member of the Texas team and for Coach Rossman as 2-22 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-23 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-24 Delco 2-25 H.R.
