H.R. No. 747 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Edgar Quincy Smith, Jr., on 1-2 February 17, 1993, at the age of 79, has brought a great loss to 1-3 the many friends and relatives of this fine gentleman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born January 7, 1914, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Edgar 1-5 and Ann Smith, he moved to Texas as a child in 1922, settling in 1-6 Houston where he would graduate from San Jacinto High School eight 1-7 years later; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Following high school, Mr. Smith continued his 1-9 education, graduating from Rice University in 1934 and the South 1-10 Texas College of Law in 1939; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty during World War 1-12 II, he served as an enlisted man and later was a commissioned 1-13 officer in the Air Service Command of the Army Air Force; and 1-14 WHEREAS, A valued employee of Humble Oil and Refining Company 1-15 for three decades, Mr. Smith was employed as a landman in the 1-16 company's exploration and production departments from 1934 until 1-17 1964, when he retired from the company and became associated with 1-18 the law firm of Dohoney, Jones and Lucus; and 1-19 WHEREAS, In 1969, he served as president of the Paddock Ranch 1-20 Company and, from 1971 until his passing, distinguished himself as 1-21 the managing general partner of Barker-Cypress Properties, Limited; 1-22 and 1-23 WHEREAS, Mr. Smith was a charter member of the American 1-24 Association of Petroleum Landmen and the Texas Christmas Tree 2-1 Growers Association and maintained membership in numerous other 2-2 professional organizations as well, including the Houston Bar 2-3 Association, the State Bar of Texas, and the Houston Association of 2-4 Petroleum Landmen; and 2-5 WHEREAS, A highly regarded member of the River Oaks Country 2-6 Club and the Racquet Club, he was an avid sports enthusiast who was 2-7 involved for more than 15 years in the presentation of the annual 2-8 River Oaks Invitational Tennis Tournament, serving as the event's 2-9 chairman in 1965; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Mr. Smith also was a devout churchgoer, attending 2-11 Trinity Episcopal Church until 1941 when he joined St. John the 2-12 Divine Episcopal Church, where he would remain an active member of 2-13 the congregation for the next five decades; and 2-14 WHEREAS, In all aspects of his life, Edgar Quincy Smith, Jr., 2-15 exemplified the highest standards of excellence, accomplishment, 2-16 and commitment to others; though his presence will be greatly 2-17 missed, his memory will surely live for many years to come in the 2-18 hearts of all who were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be 2-19 it 2-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-21 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Edgar Quincy Smith, 2-22 Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to 2-23 his wife, Louise Ashley Smith; to his son, the Honorable Ashley 2-24 Smith, and his wife, Peggy B. Smith; to his granddaughter, Margaret 2-25 Louise (Marlo) Smith; and to his sister, Elizabeth Smith Chenoweth; 2-26 and, be it further 2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-1 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 3-2 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 3-3 Edgar Quincy Smith, Jr. 3-4 Craddick 3-5 Edgar Quincy Smith, Jr. 3-6 Jones of Lubbock 3-7 Craddick
