H.R. No. 756 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas State Guard will celebrate its 50th 1-2 anniversary with a retreat parade ceremony to be held at Fort Hood 1-3 on July 16, 1993; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A proud descendant of the State Militia of Texas 1-5 that was founded in 1835, the Texas State Guard was authorized by 1-6 the legislature in 1941 and activated two years later, following 1-7 the call-up of the Texas National Guard to active duty; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Composed entirely of unpaid volunteers, the Texas 1-9 State Guard served with distinction during World War II, capably 1-10 meeting the varied challenges presented by a riot at Beaumont, a 1-11 storm at Houston, a tornado at Livingston, a train wreck in New 1-12 Braunfels, and floods in several areas of Texas; guard units also 1-13 conducted searches for escaped prisoners of war, escorted a convoy 1-14 of United States troops across the state to maneuver areas in 1-15 Louisiana, and performed heroically during the Texas City disaster 1-16 of April 1947; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Almost 95,000 individuals had served in the Texas 1-18 State Guard when it was deactivated as an active state militia on 1-19 August 28, 1947; following its reactivation in 1961, the guard 1-20 became an active member of the state military forces in 1965 with a 1-21 mission of reinforcing the National Guard in state emergencies, 1-22 replacing National Guard units called into federal service, and 1-23 serving communities in local emergencies; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Under the capable command of Major General Marlin E. 2-1 Mote, the Texas State Guard's 1,300 personnel maintain a standard 2-2 of readiness and capability well in keeping with the traditions 2-3 established by their spiritual forebears, the volunteer militiamen 2-4 of the Texas Revolution; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Throughout its eventful half-century of existence, 2-6 the Texas State Guard has earned the esteem and gratitude of all 2-7 Texans through its members' dedication to duty, professional 2-8 expertise, and sheer hard work, and its exemplary record of service 2-9 is indeed deserving of special recognition and praise; now, 2-10 therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-12 Legislature hereby commend the Texas State Guard on the occasion of 2-13 its 50th anniversary and extend to its officers and enlisted 2-14 personnel sincere best wishes for continued success in the future; 2-15 and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for the Texas State Guard as an expression of high regard 2-18 by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-19 by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-20 Delisi 2-21 H.R.
