H.R. No. 766
                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The passing of Fred Schluens, an esteemed resident
    1-2  of Millheim, on April 19, 1993, at the age of 82, has brought a
    1-3  great loss to the many friends and relatives of this beloved
    1-4  gentleman; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, A pioneer Austin County Brahman breeder,
    1-6  Mr. Schluens began breeding Brahman cattle at the age of 13,
    1-7  assuming many responsibilities beyond his years as the oldest in
    1-8  his family following the death of his father; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Despite never having had the opportunity to study
   1-10  genetics in college, Mr. Schluens was an avid reader who, through
   1-11  trial and error, went on to develop one of the finest herds of
   1-12  purebred polled Brahman cattle in the country; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, In addition to raising cattle, Mr. Schluens grew
   1-14  peanuts in Austin County for 61 years, was the first in the county
   1-15  to own a tractor, and trapped more than 650 coyotes over the course
   1-16  of his lifetime; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, An avid storyteller as well, this rugged gentleman
   1-18  epitomized the Texan of old, who worked hard all his life, lived
   1-19  off the land, and enjoyed life to the fullest along the way; though
   1-20  his presence is gone from us now, his memory will long endure in
   1-21  the hearts of the many people whose lives he touched during his
   1-22  years on this earth; now, therefore, be it
   1-23        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   1-24  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Fred Schluens and
    2-1  extend sincere sympathy to his many friends and family members;
    2-2  and, be it further
    2-3        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    2-4  prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
    2-5  House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
    2-6  Fred Schluens.
