                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes special
    1-2  pleasure in commending Northern Telecom, Inc., for its outstanding
    1-3  contributions to the community of Richardson; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, The leading supplier of fully digital
    1-5  telecommunications systems in the world, Northern Telecom employs
    1-6  more than 3,300 citizens of Richardson, making it the city's
    1-7  largest corporate employer; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, This fine corporation has generously donated
    1-9  computers and a telephone system to the Richardson Chamber of
   1-10  Commerce, and its employees have participated in a number of
   1-11  chamber activities in behalf of the local business community; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, In keeping with its reputation for innovation and
   1-13  creativity, Northern Telecom has developed an exceptional employee
   1-14  volunteer program that provides information about local volunteer
   1-15  opportunities and recognizes employee participation in civic
   1-16  activities; in 1992, this program proved to be a great success,
   1-17  encouraging more than 400 employees to become involved in community
   1-18  service projects and events, such as the local Junior Achievement
   1-19  program, the KERA public television auction, the Juvenile Diabetes
   1-20  Association's walkathon, and the White Rock Lake Marathon; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Company employees also have contributed their time
   1-22  and expertise toward the improvement of public education in nearby
   1-23  communities by serving as tutors and mentors for students; the
   1-24  corporation has furnished a local school with a sophisticated
    2-1  telephone system and contributed $50,000 toward the development and
    2-2  operation of Richardson's Enterprise City, an ambitious project
    2-3  designed to acquaint young people with the basics of business and
    2-4  commerce; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, The quality of higher education in Texas has
    2-6  benefited from the generosity of Northern Telecom and its dedicated
    2-7  employees; the business has given both equipment and financial
    2-8  support to area junior colleges and universities, and several of
    2-9  its executives serve on The University of Texas at Dallas board of
   2-10  advisors; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, A patron of the arts community as well, this
   2-12  extraordinary company makes substantial contributions to the Dallas
   2-13  Opera, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Richardson Symphony, the
   2-14  Dallas Symphony Association, and the Dallas Theater Center each
   2-15  year; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, In addition, Northern Telecom is a major contributor
   2-17  to the United Way of Dallas and Collin County and has given
   2-18  generously of its resources to benefit various health care and
   2-19  counseling services throughout the community, including the Dallas
   2-20  Suicide Center and the Collin County Crisis Center; and
   2-21        WHEREAS, This remarkable corporation has helped to make the
   2-22  community of Richardson a better place in which to work and live,
   2-23  and its many outstanding contributions are indeed worthy of special
   2-24  legislative recognition and praise; now, therefore, be it
   2-25        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-26  Legislature hereby commend Northern Telecom, Inc., for its
   2-27  continuing support of the Richardson community; and, be it further
    3-1        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
    3-2  prepared for Northern Telecom, Inc., as an expression of high
    3-3  esteem by the Texas House of Representatives.
