H.R. No. 793 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Within the city of Graham proper lies the largest 1-2 downtown square in the United States of America, seven-eighths 1-3 square mile in circumference, second only to the square in Rome, 1-4 and the people of Graham desire its designation as such; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The city of Graham was founded in 1872 by brothers 1-6 Gustavus and Edwin S. Graham; its early trade markets included a 1-7 salt works, gristmill, sawmill, and gin, and in 1877 the Cattle 1-8 Raiser's Association of Texas was organized there; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The Brazos River provides the area with an abundance 1-10 of natural beauty in Lakes Graham and Eddleman and Possum Kingdom 1-11 Lake, distinguished by a host of water activities such as boating, 1-12 fishing, water skiing, and other outdoor recreational activities 1-13 including camping and hunting; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The city of Graham is blessed with an abundance of 1-15 recreational activities and historical sites, including a 1-16 historically preserved movie theater in the downtown area, and one 1-17 of Texas' few remaining operational drive-in movie theaters; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The city of Graham is geographically located in the 1-19 heart of North Central Texas, otherwise identified as the "hub" of 1-20 three major Texas cities, Wichita Falls, Abilene, and Fort Worth; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, Graham has become an affiliate of Keep Texas 1-23 Beautiful, Inc., and has applied for designation in the Texas 2-1 Historical Commission Main Street Program; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Graced with a distinguished legacy, abundant natural 2-3 resources, and a charismatic citizenry, Graham is truly one of the 2-4 state's most outstanding small cities, and the efforts of its 2-5 residents truly merit special legislative praise and recognition; 2-6 now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-8 Legislature hereby support the people of Graham in declaring the 2-9 city's downtown square as The Largest and Greatest Downtown Square 2-10 in the United States; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-12 prepared for the citizens of Graham, Texas, as an expression of 2-13 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-14 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-15 Finnell 2-16 H.R.
