No. 794 R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The daffodil is a narcissus bulb that has long, 1-2 narrow foliage and bright yellow flowers with a trumpetlike corona 1-3 and is known for its hardiness in all regions of the State of 1-4 Texas; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Historically, the narcissus daffodil bulb is a rich 1-6 Texas tradition, and one of the few luxury items carried, because 1-7 of its small size, in the apron pockets of pioneer women who 1-8 travelled in covered wagons with their families to conquer the 1-9 virgin west; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Over 50,000 daffodil bulbs in the Carlton, Ice 1-11 Follies, and Fortune varieties were ordered and sold by the Young 1-12 County Historical Commission and the Graham Chamber of Commerce in 1-13 the fall of 1992 to the citizens of Graham, Texas, in the space of 1-14 four days; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Many species of the bulbs were planted along the dry 1-16 rock wall in historic Shawnee Springs, along with drifts of hybrid 1-17 daffodils in the park and throughout the city of Graham proper; and 1-18 WHEREAS, On the first weekend in March an annual Daffodil 1-19 Festival is sponsored by the Young County Historical Commission and 1-20 includes activities such as a drawing for a quilt made from a 1-21 historic 1917 Ann Orris jonquil pattern, a treasure hunt for 1-22 children, music, dance, and food; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The goals of the daffodil drive are to beautify 2-1 historic Shawnee Springs park and nature trail, commercial business 2-2 sites, including the downtown square, and residences within the 2-3 city of Graham; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The Young County Historical Commission and the 2-5 Graham Chamber of Commerce will play host to the second annual 2-6 daffodil bulb sale and have taken orders, to date, for over 25,000 2-7 bulbs to be planted in the fall of 1993; and 2-8 WHEREAS, The Young County Historical Commission has been 2-9 nominated by the Keep Graham Beautiful Team, an affiliate of Keep 2-10 Texas Beautiful, Inc., for the 1992-93 Keep Texas Beautiful, Inc., 2-11 Civic Organization Leadership Award; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Graham, Texas, has been graced with a celebrated 2-13 legacy, abundant natural resources, and a charismatic citizenry, 2-14 and the efforts of its residents truly merit special legislative 2-15 praise and recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 2-17 Legislature hereby recognize the efforts of the people of Graham to 2-18 establish their city as the Daffodil Capital of Texas; and, be it 2-19 further 2-20 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-21 prepared for the citizens of Graham, Texas, as an expression of 2-22 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-23 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. 2-24 Finnell 2-25 H.R.
