No. 825 73R11062 BNL-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, Susan Hill has devoted considerable time and talent 1-2 to volunteer service in the neighborhoods of her community, and her 1-3 efforts as cofounder of the Houston Proud Neighborhood Program have 1-4 had a profound and positive impact on residential areas throughout 1-5 that city; and 1-6 WHEREAS, With the help of Jenny Laminack, Ms. Hill 1-7 established this program to help improve and strengthen 1-8 neighborhoods through organized and systematic community service 1-9 projects, and she currently is leading efforts to transform the 1-10 Houston Proud Neighborhood Program into an independent, nonprofit 1-11 entity that will be known as The Neighborhood Program; and 1-12 WHEREAS, This new program will continue working toward the 1-13 goals established by Houston Proud in 1986, enlisting volunteers to 1-14 provide technical support, leadership training, and resources to 1-15 neighborhoods throughout the Houston metropolitan area and thus 1-16 allowing residents to create and strengthen community associations, 1-17 civic clubs, crime prevention programs, and other 1-18 neighborhood-based organizations; and 1-19 WHEREAS, A longtime advocate of strengthening urban 1-20 neighborhoods and fostering a more positive living environment, 1-21 this respected civic leader has dedicated her time and talent to 1-22 numerous community organizations, including The Regional Project, 1-23 Wortham House Advisory Group, the Community Associations Institute, 1-24 the Houston Crackdown Community Partnership, and many others; and 2-1 WHEREAS, She has taken an active leadership role in several 2-2 other organizations as well; a former president of her 2-3 neighborhood's community association, she also has worked with 2-4 Texas Neighborhoods Together, a statewide organization of 2-5 neighborhood groups, and the Cypress Creek United Civic 2-6 Associations, a coalition of 100 community associations, civic 2-7 clubs, and business affiliates; and 2-8 WHEREAS, In addition to her many volunteer activities, this 2-9 accomplished woman excels in a challenging position as director of 2-10 finance, administration, and planning for the University of Houston 2-11 Division of Continuing Education and Off-Campus Institutes; in this 2-12 capacity she maintains lasting ties with the school where she 2-13 earned both a bachelor of arts degree and a master of business 2-14 administration degree; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Ms. Hill has enjoyed the love 2-16 and support of her husband, Roy, and their marriage has been 2-17 blessed with a daughter, Sarah, whose many accomplishments have 2-18 brought them much pride and joy; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Susan Hill's outstanding community service efforts 2-20 have made a lasting difference in the lives of many Houston-area 2-21 residents, for by helping them to improve their environment, she 2-22 has improved the quality of their lives; the organization she has 2-23 established has reminded Houstonians that life in one of the 2-24 nation's largest cities does not have to be anonymous and 2-25 impersonal, and that individual commitment and hard work can combat 2-26 the most pervasive of urban problems; now, therefore, be it 2-27 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas 3-1 Legislature hereby commend Susan Hill for her numerous 3-2 contributions to the improvement of Houston neighborhoods and 3-3 extend to her warmest best wishes for many more years of continued 3-4 success; and, be it further 3-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-6 prepared for Ms. Hill as an expression of high regard by the Texas 3-7 House of Representatives.
