R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Frank M. Luecke, Jr., on July 10,
1-2 1992, has deeply saddened the many friends, relatives, and
1-3 colleagues of this distinguished newspaperman; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born on July 17, 1931, in Mountain Grove, Missouri,
1-5 he earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of
1-6 Missouri in 1953 and two years later became the editor of the
1-7 Purcell Register in Oklahoma; and
1-8 WHEREAS, The youngest publisher in United States suburban
1-9 journalism in 1956, Mr. Luecke became the editor and publisher of
1-10 The Cameron Herald the following year, in which capacity he would
1-11 serve with the utmost distinction for more than three decades; and
1-12 WHEREAS, During his years with the paper, Mr. Luecke gained a
1-13 well-deserved reputation for excellence within the industry and
1-14 served in a leadership capacity in a number of professional
1-15 organizations, including the Texas Press Association and the
1-16 National Newspaper Association, and at such notable industry events
1-17 as the First Amendment Congress and the 40th World Congress of
1-18 Newspaper Publishers; and
1-19 WHEREAS, This innovative journalist was the first to use a
1-20 computer mainframe in a nonmetropolitan newspaper, authored several
1-21 professional articles for trade journals regarding the use of high
1-22 technology in print media, and was considered a leader at the
1-23 nation's first desktop publishing conference; and
1-24 WHEREAS, The recipient of many awards over the course of his
2-1 remarkable career, he was honored on a number of occasions by the
2-2 Texas Press Association, earned listings in such publications as
2-3 International Who's Who of Intellectuals and Who's Who of America,
2-4 was awarded the Golden Pencil Award, and in 1970 became the first
2-5 Texan to win the Golden Dozen Award from the International
2-6 Conference of Weekly Newspaper Editors; and
2-7 WHEREAS, A dedicated civic leader as well, Mr. Luecke served
2-8 distinguished terms as president of the Cameron Chamber of
2-9 Commerce, the local rotary club, and the Central Texas Symphony and
2-10 as director of the Cameron Industrial Park, and he played a pivotal
2-11 role in bringing to fruition countless worthwhile projects in his
2-12 community; and
2-13 WHEREAS, Frank Luecke was a man of extraordinary vision and
2-14 energy; blessed with unbounded enthusiasm for new challenges, he
2-15 consistently used his unique talents and intelligence to better the
2-16 world around him; though he is deeply missed by his family and many
2-17 friends, his memory will surely live on in the hearts of all who
2-18 were privileged to know him through the lasting legacy of his
2-19 accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
2-20 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
2-21 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Frank M. Luecke, Jr.,
2-22 and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
2-23 children, Martin W. Luecke of Austin and Leslie Luecke Moss of
2-24 Lubbock; to his sister, Betty Glenn of Petoskey, Michigan; to his
2-25 brother, Charles McQuitty of South Bend, Indiana; and to his two
2-26 beloved grandchildren; and, be it further
2-27 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-1 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
3-2 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-3 Frank M. Luecke, Jr.
