                                  R E S O L U T I O N
    1-1        WHEREAS, Samuel Bier, a gentleman and a leader, has served
    1-2  his country, his state, his comrades, his community, his family,
    1-3  and his friends for well over half a century; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Despite having been captured and held as a
    1-5  prisoner-of-war during World War II, he continued to honorably
    1-6  serve his country in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, rising to
    1-7  the rank of lieutenant colonel before retiring from the military
    1-8  and continuing his service in other ways; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Mr. Bier has served his state for a decade as
   1-10  chairman of the Texas Veterans Commission, where his wise and
   1-11  understanding leadership has guided the development and
   1-12  implementation of programs that benefit Texas' 1.8 million
   1-13  veterans; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, He has served his comrades in leadership positions
   1-15  in the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, American
   1-16  Ex-Prisoners of War, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and other
   1-17  veterans organizations as commander, legislative director, and
   1-18  active member; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, He has served in the community as a volunteer for
   1-20  many church, civic, and social activities, as well as working twice
   1-21  a week as a volunteer in a veterans' hospital; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Along with his dedication to veterans issues, this
   1-23  fine gentleman is above all else deeply devoted to his wife, Ruth
    2-1  Bier, and to his son, Ronald Bier; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, A man of rare strength and spirit, Samuel Bier has
    2-3  constantly displayed an uncommon dedication to the veterans of our
    2-4  state and to the ideals of freedom and democracy they have sworn to
    2-5  protect; his extraordinary contributions have enhanced the lives of
    2-6  countless Texas veterans and he is indeed worthy of our highest
    2-7  praise and recognition for his continuing accomplishments in this
    2-8  regard; now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 73rd Texas
   2-10  Legislature, Regular Session, hereby commend Samuel Bier for his
   2-11  exemplary contributions to the veterans of this state and extend
   2-12  our sincere gratitude for his many fine achievements on their
   2-13  behalf; and, be it further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
   2-15  prepared for Mr. Bier as an expression of highest esteem from the
   2-16  Texas House of Representatives.
