                                 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
                                        AN ACT
1-1 relating to the term of office of municipal judges.
1-2 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-3 SECTION 1. Section 29.005, Government Code, is amended to
    1-4 read as follows:
1-5 Sec. 29.005. Term of Office. The judge of a municipal court
1-6 serves for a term of office of two years unless the municipality
1-7 provides for a longer term pursuant to Article XI, Section 11, of
1-8 the Texas Constitution. A municipal court judge who is not
1-9 reappointed shall not continue to perform the duties of office
1-10 until the judge's successor is qualified for more than 90 days
1-11 after the expiration of the term.
1-12 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect January 1, 1994.
1-13 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the
1-14 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
1-15 emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
1-16 constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
1-17 days in each house be suspended, and that this Act take effect and
1-18 be in force from and after its passage, and it is so enacted.
