                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas joins with the
    1-2  Shrine of North America in recognizing February 7 through 13, 1993,
    1-3  as Burn Awareness Week; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, Fire and burn injuries are leading causes of
    1-5  accidental deaths in the United States, especially among children
    1-6  and the elderly; nationwide a burn is suffered every 15 seconds and
    1-7  every year more than two million people are victims of some kind of
    1-8  burn injury; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Children are especially vulnerable to dangers of
   1-10  fire; at least one of every three burn victims is a child,
   1-11  resulting in some one million children requiring medical treatment
   1-12  for burn injuries each year; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, It is estimated that approximately 75 percent of all
   1-14  burn injuries and deaths could be prevented by a comprehensive
   1-15  national education and awareness campaign; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The Shrine of North America has dedicated its
   1-17  resources to educating the public about burn prevention; known for
   1-18  its outstanding work in burn treatment, the organization operates
   1-19  three Shriners Burn Institutes to provide advanced medical care for
   1-20  burn-injured children; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, By publishing informative pamphlets, initiating
   1-22  cooperative ventures with local fire departments, and seeking the
   1-23  declaration of a Burn Awareness Week, the Shrine of North America
    2-1  has taken great strides toward ending the tragedy of preventable
    2-2  burn injuries, and its exceptional efforts in this regard indeed
    2-3  merit the praise and support of the Legislature of the State of
    2-4  Texas; now, therefore, be it
    2-5        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
    2-6  hereby declare February 7 through 13, 1993, as Burn Awareness Week
    2-7  and encourage all citizens to join in support of the Shrine of
    2-8  North America and the Shriners Burn Institutes in their admirable
    2-9  efforts to save lives and prevent burn injuries; and, be it further
   2-10        RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the
   2-11  Shrine of North America as an expression of esteem from the Texas
   2-12  Legislature.
