                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas joins with the
    1-2  residents of Pittsburg in recognizing March 2, 1993, as Pittsburg
    1-3  Day; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, This charming town was founded in 1856 and named in
    1-5  honor of Major William H. Pitts, a prominent civic leader who
    1-6  migrated to Pittsburg from Georgia in 1850; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Situated near Big Cypress Creek in densely wooded
    1-8  land in Camp County, Pittsburg was named the county seat for the
    1-9  newly organized county in 1874; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, In 1876 and 1877, two narrow gauge railroads formed
   1-11  a junction at Pittsburg, which then became the shipping point of
   1-12  the county; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Since Camp County is nestled in an area that
   1-14  receives abundant rain and enjoys rich soil, the mainstay of
   1-15  Pittsburg's economy has been agriculture; today, sweet potatoes,
   1-16  peaches, blueberries, and poultry are important commodities; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Pittsburg enjoys a varied economy based on
   1-18  agriculture as well as manufactured furniture, woodworking,
   1-19  tractors, clothing, gourmet food, and egg production, all of which
   1-20  contribute to the wealth of the area; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, One of the city's chief assets is its friendly and
   1-22  convivial residents who are delighted to welcome tourists and
   1-23  exhibit the treasure trove of Victorian structures that abound
    2-1  there; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Pittsburg has a wealth of history and tradition; the
    2-3  residents enjoy a calmer pace of life that reminds visitors of a
    2-4  forgotten past; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Residents of Pittsburg are proud of their lovely
    2-6  town's place in Texas history and of its contributions to the
    2-7  state's development; the citizens rejoice in the town's illustrious
    2-8  past as well as its present and future; now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-10  hereby recognize March 2, 1993, as Pittsburg Day, and extend
   2-11  congratulations to the citizens of the community for their
   2-12  outstanding achievements; and, be it further
   2-13        RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the
   2-14  City of Pittsburg as a memento of this joyous celebration from the
   2-15  Texas Legislature.
