S.C.R. No. 33 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The citizens of Marshall, Texas, annually express 1-2 their pride in their beloved city on Marshall Day, celebrated this 1-3 year on March 9, 1993; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Marshall Day honors the city and its people and 1-5 recognizes their contributions to the State of Texas; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Located in Harrison County in the beautiful piney 1-7 woods of East Texas, Marshall was settled in 1839 and became the 1-8 county seat in 1842; the surrounding area is noted for its hilly, 1-9 rolling terrain that is half forested; and 1-10 WHEREAS, In 1861 Marshall was one of the largest and 1-11 wealthiest cities in Texas; after the fall of Vicksburg, it became 1-12 the seat of civil authority west of the Mississippi River, wartime 1-13 capital of Missouri, and headquarters of the Trans-Mississippi 1-14 Postal Department; and 1-15 WHEREAS, An important commercial center that contributes to 1-16 the growth and progress of East Texas, Marshall boasts a thriving 1-17 economy based on lignite processing, dairy products, feed, 1-18 clothing, and products of clay, wood, iron, and steel; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The Ginocchio National Historic District encompasses 1-20 three square blocks in the old downtown area centering around the 1-21 1896 Ginocchio Hotel; and 1-22 WHEREAS, One of the state's finest examples of Victorian 1-23 hotel architecture, the hotel is famous for early Texas notables 2-1 who lodged and dined there; today it is a bed and breakfast inn and 2-2 guests may enjoy its fine dining facilities; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The famed Marshall pottery established in 1896 is 2-4 one of the largest manufacturers of glazed pottery in the United 2-5 States; the main showroom attracts visitors from throughout the 2-6 country who view hundreds of kinds of decorative and utility pieces 2-7 in every form and color and watch demonstrations of pottery making 2-8 and firing; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Nearby Caddo Lake State Park provides exceptional 2-10 accommodations for outdoor lovers including fishing, camping, 2-11 hunting, and water sports; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Throughout the year visitors participate in the 2-13 FireAnt Festival, MarketFest, Stagecoach Days, the Tennessee 2-14 Walking Horse Show, and the spectacular Christmas "Wonderland of 2-15 Lights"; and 2-16 WHEREAS, Marshall Day is an appropriate occasion for the 2-17 Texas Legislature to recognize the important contributions that the 2-18 City of Marshall and its citizens have made and continue to make to 2-19 the state's greatness and to the growth and progress of their 2-20 beautiful city; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 2-22 hereby recognize March 9, 1993, as Marshall Day and extend best 2-23 wishes to its residents for a most enjoyable and rewarding event; 2-24 and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the 3-1 citizens of Marshall as a memento of this important day and as an 3-2 expression of the esteem of the Texas Legislature.
