S.C.R. No. 39
                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The citizens of Lometa and the State of Texas
    1-2  suffered the loss of a valued friend and highly esteemed resident
    1-3  with the death of JT King on January 27, 1993; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, One of the Southwest Conference's most prominent
    1-5  coaches, Mr. King had a long and productive career; he had
    1-6  successfully served as head coach at Texas Tech University for nine
    1-7  years and as athletic director for nine years before his
    1-8  retirement; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The outstanding coach made many notable
   1-10  contributions to his profession throughout his career, and he will
   1-11  be missed by his family and former players who held him in high
   1-12  regard; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, The distinguished gentleman earned the respect and
   1-14  admiration of his associates and students who remember his
   1-15  dedication to his work and the sense of fair play he instilled in
   1-16  his athletes; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Born on October 22, 1912, in Wilmot, Arkansas, Mr.
   1-18  King graduated from John Reagan High School in Houston and The
   1-19  University of Texas at Austin; he began his coaching career at
   1-20  Kenedy, Texas, and won a state championship at Enid, Oklahoma;
   1-21  after serving as assistant coach at Tulane University in New
   1-22  Orleans, he returned to Texas for the remainder of his career; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Recognized for his exceptional abilities, JT King
    2-1  became an assistant coach at Texas A&M University and The
    2-2  University of Texas at Austin before moving to Lubbock in 1958; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, A member of the Cotton Bowl Team Selection Committee
    2-4  for 12 years, Mr. King was also involved in most of the major bowl
    2-5  games including the Cotton, Gator, Sun, Peach, Bluebonnet, and Hula
    2-6  bowls as well as the All-Star games, the East-West Shrine Game, and
    2-7  the Blue-Gray Game; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Well known for his love of the game of football, he
    2-9  lectured at 22 different football clinics; voted into the Texas
   2-10  Tech University Athletic Hall of Honor and The University of Texas
   2-11  Longhorn Hall of Fame, he received the distinguished American Award
   2-12  given by the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame and was
   2-13  selected for Men of Achievement in Texas; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, Respected for his sound judgment and leadership
   2-15  qualities, Mr. King will be remembered for the integrity he brought
   2-16  to his responsibilities and the professional way he carried out his
   2-17  duties; and
   2-18        WHEREAS, His strength of character and sense of purpose were
   2-19  readily apparent to all who knew him and to all whose lives he
   2-20  touched; now, therefore, be it
   2-21        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   2-22  hereby extend sincere condolences to the family members of JT King:
   2-23  his wife, Beth; his children, Marilyn and John King, Marie and
   2-24  Charles King, Suzie and Robert King, and Elizabeth and Tom Griess;
   2-25  and his 12 grandchildren; and, be it further
    3-1        RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the
    3-2  members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
    3-3  Texas Legislature, and that when the legislature adjourns this day,
    3-4  it do so in memory of JT King.
