No. 51 1-2 (In the Senate - Filed March 12, 1993; March 15, 1993, read 1-3 first time and referred to Committee on Education; March 31, 1993, 1-4 reported favorably by the following vote: Yeas 8, Nays 0; 1-5 March 31, 1993, sent to printer.) 1-6 COMMITTEE VOTE 1-7 Yea Nay PNV Absent 1-8 Ratliff x 1-9 Haley x 1-10 Barrientos x 1-11 Bivins x 1-12 Harris of Tarrant x 1-13 Luna x 1-14 Montford x 1-15 Shapiro x 1-16 Sibley x 1-17 Turner x 1-18 Zaffirini x 1-19 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-20 WHEREAS, The World Wise Schools Program was initiated by the 1-21 Peace Corps to promote global education, international 1-22 understanding, and awareness and acceptance of differing cultures 1-23 in the schools of America; and 1-24 WHEREAS, Through videotapes, newsletters, and personal 1-25 correspondence between students and Peace Corps volunteers, the 1-26 World Wise Schools Program promotes respect for other cultures and 1-27 broadens and enriches the lives of the students participating in 1-28 the program; and 1-29 WHEREAS, Correspondence between Peace Corps volunteers and 1-30 students in American classrooms is the centerpiece of World Wise 1-31 Schools; through matching volunteers with classrooms in the United 1-32 States, the program has involved more than 165,000 students since 1-33 its inception three years ago; and 1-34 WHEREAS, In addition to the "pen pal" project, returned Peace 1-35 Corps volunteers visit schools to share their experiences through 1-36 anecdotes, music, slide shows, photographs, and costumes; and 1-37 WHEREAS, Endorsement of the World Wise Schools Program in 1-38 Texas would be beneficial to the students and teachers of the 1-39 state; each teacher participating in the program would receive four 1-40 videotapes on the countries where the Peace Corps is involved as 1-41 well as newsletters containing teaching tips from other World Wise 1-42 teachers and updates on Peace Corps activities around the world; 1-43 and 1-44 WHEREAS, Currently 17 states, including our neighboring 1-45 states of Oklahoma and New Mexico, have endorsed the World Wise 1-46 Schools Program and have incorporated the program into their school 1-47 curriculum, thus receiving the benefit of this resource; now, 1-48 therefore, be it 1-49 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 1-50 hereby urge the State Board of Education to endorse the World Wise 1-51 Schools Program and support its integration into the educational 1-52 curriculum of Texas schools; and, be it further 1-53 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 1-54 prepared for the Central Education Agency and the State Board of 1-55 Education. 1-56 * * * * * 1-57 Austin, 1-58 Texas 1-59 March 31, 1993 1-60 Hon.
