No. 57 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The City of Abilene, Texas, and the City of Corinth, 1-2 Greece, will become sister cities on March 28, 1993, when an 1-3 official Greek delegation arrives in Abilene for an eight-day tour; 1-4 and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is delighted 1-6 to recognize the eminent delegation from Corinth as they visit the 1-7 modern West Texas town; and 1-8 WHEREAS, The notable occasion affords an excellent 1-9 opportunity to showcase the Star of West Texas as well as to 1-10 establish relationships in the global community that will enable 1-11 Abilene and Texas to enhance their leadership positions in the 1-12 international community; and 1-13 WHEREAS, The citizens of Abilene are looking forward to 1-14 developing personal friendships with the residents of Corinth and 1-15 to share experiences of their individual lives; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The delegation's visit will provide many 1-17 opportunities for cultural, medical, and educational exchanges, 1-18 international business and trade, and reciprocal friendship between 1-19 Abilenians and Corinthians; and 1-20 WHEREAS, The representatives of the City of Corinth will be 1-21 treated to a hearty West Texas welcome complete with a cowboy 1-22 parade, Mexican Fiesta, Country and Western Dance, shopping trips, 1-23 an open house at Dyess Air Force Base, tours of universities, 2-1 schools, a ranch, and Very Important Visitors dinners; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Corinth was established in the 9th century B.C. and 2-3 was the chief Greek merchant city until Athens became the center of 2-4 trade; the ancient city was destroyed by Rome in 146 B.C. only to 2-5 be rebuilt by Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.; modern Corinth was founded 2-6 in 1858 after an earthquake destroyed the old city; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The ancient Greek culture provided the foundation of 2-8 civilization in Western culture; the alphabets of all major 2-9 European languages are based on the ancient Greek alphabet; and 2-10 WHEREAS, A parliamentary republic with a president and prime 2-11 minister, Greece embraces an area about the size of the State of 2-12 New York; half of its people live in rural communities with about 2-13 one-third of the population engaged in agriculture; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Lively people who take great delight in conversation 2-15 and the company of others, the Greek visitors will relish the time 2-16 they spend with the friendly people of West Texas; and 2-17 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is honored to have these 2-18 distinguished visitors as guests of the Lone Star State; now, 2-19 therefore, be it 2-20 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 2-21 hereby extend an official welcome to this illustrious group with 2-22 best wishes for a most enjoyable and successful stay in the City of 2-23 Abilene; and, be it further 2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the 2-25 Corinthian delegation as a token of friendship from the citizens of 3-1 Texas.
