SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas is proud to
1-2 join with Texas A&M University in recognizing the 25 years of
1-3 dedicated service of Dr. Carlton Van Doren who joined the faculty
1-4 of the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences in 1968;
1-5 and
1-6 WHEREAS, Through his tenure at Texas A&M University this
1-7 outstanding tourism educator has distinguished himself as a teacher
1-8 and graduate student mentor serving on more than 50 doctoral and
1-9 master's student committees with many of his former students
1-10 becoming deans and professors at other universities; and
1-11 WHEREAS, As a dedicated scholar he has brought honor to
1-12 himself and to Texas A&M University as an author of four books, 16
1-13 journal articles, and 43 reports, papers, and articles; Dr. Van
1-14 Doren served as founding editor of the Journal of Leisure Science
1-15 and as an editor of the Journal of Leisure Research and the Journal
1-16 of Travel Research; and
1-17 WHEREAS, Through his contributions to recreation and tourism
1-18 Dr. Van Doren has received numerous awards and honors including the
1-19 Distinguished Fellow Award from the Society of Park and Recreation
1-20 Educators, the Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt Award for Excellence
1-21 in Recreation and Park Research from the National Recreation and
1-22 Park Association, and the Charles K. Brightbill Award presented by
1-23 the University of Illinois; and
2-1 WHEREAS, In addition to his dedication to Texas A&M
2-2 University, he and his wife, Sharon, have devoted themselves to
2-3 raising two fine daughters, Abbie and Becky, both of whom graduated
2-4 from Texas A&M University; and
2-5 WHEREAS, It is indeed appropriate that the Texas Senate
2-6 recognize his enormous contributions to the university and the
2-7 State of Texas; now, therefore, be it
2-8 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
2-9 hereby express sincere appreciation to Carlton Van Doren for his 25
2-10 years of service to the people of the State of Texas, Texas A&M
2-11 University, the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism
2-12 Sciences, and the students of Texas A&M University; and, be it
2-13 further
2-14 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for this
2-15 esteemed educator as an expression of highest regard from the Texas
2-16 Legislature.
