No. 71 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes great 1-2 pleasure in recognizing Denton as the Redbud Capital of Texas for 1-3 its magnificent redbud trees that herald the arrival of spring each 1-4 year; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The lovely City of Denton has a long and 1-6 distinguished history and part of that history is associated with 1-7 the redbud tree; and 1-8 WHEREAS, In 1937, L. H. Hubbard, President of the College of 1-9 Industrial Arts, now Texas Woman's University, started an extensive 1-10 program to make Denton a redbud city; and 1-11 WHEREAS, President Hubbard established a plan in the 1930s to 1-12 plant hundreds of redbuds on the college campus and encouraged 1-13 residents to do the same to their lawns and yards throughout the 1-14 city; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Through the years Denton citizens have held annual 1-16 Redbud Festivals, crowned a Redbud Queen, and identified trails 1-17 lined with redbud trees; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Designated by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a 1-19 Tree City USA, Denton encourages the planting and maintenance of 1-20 the beautiful trees; programs that promote redbud plantings include 1-21 the landscaping of the future Performing Arts Building provided by 1-22 the Greater Denton Arts Council, plantings from private donations 1-23 along Carroll Boulevard, and trees planted in the landscape medians 2-1 on University Drive with funds from a grant from the Texas 2-2 Department of Transportation; and 2-3 WHEREAS, During the Christmas Treecycle program held on 2-4 January 2, 1993, the Denton Rotary Club donated a redbud tree to 2-5 each citizen who dropped off a Christmas tree for recycling; 2-6 approximately 300 redbud trees were donated to Denton schools; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The Treeline program sponsored by the city utilities 2-8 department replaces trees under electric lines with low-growing 2-9 trees including the redbud; and 2-10 WHEREAS, The citizens of Denton are to be commended for their 2-11 magnificent efforts to beautify their city through planting and 2-12 maintaining redbuds and other native trees throughout their 2-13 community; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 2-15 hereby designate the City of Denton as the Redbud Capital of Texas 2-16 and extend best wishes to its residents for continued success in 2-17 the years to come; and, be it further 2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for the 2-19 City of Denton as an expression of the admiration and esteem of the 2-20 Texas Legislature.
