                             SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, Section 4.10, Chapter 773, Acts of the 66th
    1-2  Legislature, 1979 (Article 601b, Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes),
    1-3  specifies those persons eligible for graves and monuments in the
    1-4  State Cemetery and authorizes the legislature to grant eligibility
    1-5  to other persons through the adoption of a concurrent resolution;
    1-6  and
    1-7        WHEREAS, John J. Grumbles came to Texas in 1837 and moved to
    1-8  Travis County around 1840; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The second owner of Barton Springs, Captain Grumbles
   1-10  operated a ferry across the Colorado River; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, In charge of the barbecue held on the Fourth of July
   1-12  in 1852 celebrating the new Capitol building Captain Grumbles built
   1-13  the Swante Palm Log Cabin in Zilker Park; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, One of the early Texas Rangers, Captain Grumbles
   1-15  formed a company that fought in the Mexican War in 1845 and also
   1-16  led a company of Rangers in the Indian Wars in 1850; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, After his death in 1858, Captain Grumbles was buried
   1-18  in the first grave in San Saba, Texas, which remains there today;
   1-19  and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The erection of a monument in the State Cemetery
   1-21  requires legislative authorization; now, therefore, be it
   1-22        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-23  hereby authorize the erection of a monument in the State Cemetery
    2-1  in memory of Captain John J. Grumbles at no cost to the state,
    2-2  provided proper application is made to the General Services
    2-3  Commission as required by state law.
