   1-15                     SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
   1-16        WHEREAS, Section 4.10, Chapter 773, Acts of the 66th
   1-17  Legislature, 1979 (Article 601b, Vernon's Texas Civil Statutes),
   1-18  specifies those persons eligible for graves and monuments in the
   1-19  State Cemetery and authorizes the legislature to grant eligibility
   1-20  to other persons through the adoption of a concurrent resolution;
   1-21  and
   1-22        WHEREAS, John J. Grumbles came to Texas in 1837 and moved to
   1-23  Travis County around 1840; and
   1-24        WHEREAS, The second owner of Barton Springs, Captain Grumbles
   1-25  operated a ferry across the Colorado River; and
   1-26        WHEREAS, In charge of the barbecue held on the Fourth of July
   1-27  in 1852 celebrating the new Capitol building Captain Grumbles built
   1-28  the Swante Palm Log Cabin in Zilker Park; and
   1-29        WHEREAS, One of the early Texas Rangers, Captain Grumbles
   1-30  formed a company that fought in the Mexican War in 1845 and also
   1-31  led a company of Rangers in the Indian Wars in 1850; and
   1-32        WHEREAS, After his death in 1858, Captain Grumbles was buried
   1-33  in the first grave in San Saba, Texas, which remains there today;
   1-34  and
   1-35        WHEREAS, The erection of a monument in the State Cemetery
   1-36  requires legislative authorization; now, therefore, be it
   1-37        RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas
   1-38  hereby authorize the erection of a monument in the State Cemetery
   1-39  in memory of Captain John J. Grumbles at no cost to the state,
   1-40  provided proper application is made to the General Services
   1-41  Commission as required by state law.
