No. 83 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Legislature of the State of Texas takes great 1-2 pride in recognizing Little Joe Hernandez, the famous singer and 1-3 Grammy award winner, for his relentless efforts to reach young 1-4 Mexican Americans with his message on the importance of education; 1-5 and 1-6 WHEREAS, A well-known star in the music industry, Little Joe 1-7 Hernandez has recorded over 40 albums, has appeared on numerous 1-8 television shows and in a movie, and has earned a Grammy for Best 1-9 Mexican/American performance for his 1991 LP "16 de Septiembre"; 1-10 and 1-11 WHEREAS, He is now on an urgent crusade to encourage young 1-12 Latinos to stay in school, and he has spent countless hours trying 1-13 to awaken communities to the devastating effects that current 1-14 drop-out rates will have on the future of American society; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Little Joe uses speeches, songs, bumper stickers, 1-16 concerts, and journalistic articles to convey his message; he 1-17 stresses formal education, knowledge of self and one's heritage, 1-18 and high moral principles as areas that need rebuilding today; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Deeply concerned about the future of young Chicanos 1-20 as individuals as well as the future of their communities, Little 1-21 Joe cites the current unemployment lines, homelessness, and 1-22 joblessness as evidence of the need to keep children in the school 1-23 system and turn the drop-out statistics around; and 2-1 WHEREAS, A remarkably gifted artist, an ardent humanitarian, 2-2 and a tenacious reformer, Little Joe Hernandez instills a sense of 2-3 pride and hope in the children to whom he speaks, and his efforts 2-4 to encourage them to better themselves and their lifestyles will 2-5 undoubtedly have a positive effect on Chicano communities across 2-6 the country; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas 2-8 hereby commend Little Joe Hernandez for his sincere endeavors on 2-9 behalf of our youth and express appreciation to him for the time he 2-10 so generously devotes to the cause of education in our state and 2-11 nation; and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be prepared for him 2-13 as a token of esteem from the Texas Legislature.
