1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
1-3 recognizing Thursday, February 4, 1993, as National Girls and Women
1-4 in Sports Day; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Inspired by the life of the great Olympic
1-6 volleyball player, Flo Hyman, National Girls and Women in Sports
1-7 Day was established as a tribute to women athletes of all ages
1-8 throughout our country; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Organized by Girls, Incorporated, the National
1-10 Association for Girls and Women in Sports, the Women's Sports
1-11 Foundation, and the Young Women's Christian Association of
1-12 America, the day commemorates the athletic skills and the efforts
1-13 of all female sports leaders who have worked on behalf of equality
1-14 of women in sports; and
1-15 WHEREAS, While there is now a prodigious number of women
1-16 participating in sports competitions in all parts of America, it
1-17 is essential that more women be encouraged to embrace sports
1-18 careers and to seek office in major sports organizations; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Participation in athletics provides an effective
1-20 conduit for young girls and women to develop self-discipline and
1-21 leadership skills; and
1-22 WHEREAS, National Girls and Women in Sports Day provides
1-23 an opportunity to raise major issues for women in sports with our
2-1 country's leaders; each year a ceremony is held on Capitol Hill
2-2 attended by senators, other members of Congress, and champion
2-3 female athletes; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Breaking down the barriers that exclude women from
2-5 sports will be the theme and goal of the seventh annual National
2-6 Girls and Women in Sports Day which is being sponsored by JC Penney;
2-7 women who participate in sports break various cultural and economic
2-8 barriers that often are faced by women of different ethnic or
2-9 regional backgrounds; and
2-10 WHEREAS, It is conducive to the future expansion of women in
2-11 sports that we honor today's female athletes for their outstanding
2-12 achievements and the exemplary commitment they provide for our
2-13 youth; now, therefore, be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-15 73rd Legislature, hereby join with the organizers of National Girls
2-16 and Women in Sports Day to express pride in our female athletes and
2-17 to recognize February 4, 1993, as a day of celebration in honor of
2-18 their accomplishments; and, be it further
2-19 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-20 for girls and women in sports as a token of esteem from the
2-21 Texas Senate.
