    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Islas Salas will be presented a 1992 Mickey Leland
    1-3  Distinguished Service Award at the Second Annual Mickey Leland
    1-4  Birthday Celebration in Houston; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Recognized for her exceptional generosity to
    1-6  mitigate homelessness and hunger in the Houston area, Islas Salas
    1-7  has freely given of her time and means as founder and president of
    1-8  the Rehab Mission, Incorporated; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The dedicated benefactress sold her home and used
   1-10  her life savings to purchase a dilapidated apartment complex which
   1-11  she converted into the Rehab Mission; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, The establishment for senior citizens provides
   1-13  shelter, food, clothing, job training and referrals, and assistance
   1-14  with any benefits the residents are eligible to receive; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Of the 167 agencies in Houston for the elderly,
   1-16  the Rehab Mission is the only one providing comprehensive service;
   1-17  and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Islas Salas is an exceptional supervisor and fund
   1-19  raiser; her services on behalf of the needy are expanding to include
   1-20  a home for children; under her expert guidance, a gardening program
   1-21  provides food for the mission, and she helps provide food and
   1-22  clothing for 12 other missions; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Her marvelous accomplishments have not gone
    2-1  unnoticed in the community; for her humanitarian work, Islas Salas
    2-2  has received the KTRP-TV Channel 13 Jefferson Award and has received
    2-3  the commendation of both former Mayor Kathy Whitmire and the
    2-4  Houston Post; now, therefore, be it
    2-5        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-6  73rd Legislature, hereby express its deepest gratitude to Islas Salas
    2-7  for her magnificent work in providing a home, food, and clothing for
    2-8  Houston's elderly citizens and children; and, be it further
    2-9        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-10  her as an expression of the high regard and appreciation of the
   2-11  Texas Senate.
