    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Raul Salinas is an internationally regarded
    1-3  Chicano poet, essayist, translator, and political activist who
    1-4  is beloved by his community, and the Texas Senate is pleased to
    1-5  recognize him for his contributions to the citizens of Austin; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Owner of Resistencia Bookstore on East Sixth Street,
    1-7  Mr. Salinas specializes in Native American, Chicano-Mexicano,
    1-8  African-American, and children's literature; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Raul Salinas is respected in both local and
   1-10  international circles for his commitment to politics, especially
   1-11  as an activist in Chicano and American Indian movements; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Mr. Salinas has invented new forms of poetry
   1-13  relevant to the present and the future, and his creative work has
   1-14  added to the richness of a culturally diverse community; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The valued poet has dedicated his productive life
   1-16  to the premise that poetry belongs to the people and his poetry
   1-17  reflects his politics; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, His love for poetic expression and his contribution
   1-19  of his time and talent have helped to build the populist writing
   1-20  community in the city; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Through his invaluable work with the youth of
   1-22  Austin, Mr. Salinas has earned the respect and admiration of others;
   1-23  and
    2-1        WHEREAS, A counselor with the South Austin Youth Service,
    2-2  he works primarily with dropouts and those students who are at risk
    2-3  of dropping out of school; he has spent several years encouraging
    2-4  young writers in his "Continuing Series of East Austin Poetic Action";
    2-5  now, therefore, be it
    2-6        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-7  73rd Legislature, hereby commend Raul Salinas for his unselfish work
    2-8  to advance the literacy and unity of the Austin community; and, be
    2-9  it further
   2-10        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-11  Mr. Salinas as an expression of the high regard and appreciation of
   2-12  the Texas Senate.
