    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, It is indeed an honor and a great privilege for the
    1-3  Senate of the State of Texas to recognize Carl Bert Albert for his
    1-4  inimitable career in public service; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Long regarded as one of our country's premier
    1-6  statesmen, Carl Albert has endeared himself to the people of Texas
    1-7  for his remarkable contributions to the nation as Speaker of the
    1-8  United States House of Representatives from 1971 to 1976; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The love and respect for this admirable gentleman
   1-10  are shared by citizens from all walks of life; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, A native of Oklahoma, Carl Albert has brought
   1-12  recognition and a sense of deep pride to his beloved state; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, His illustrious career in government began in 1935
   1-14  when as a young man he became a legal clerk in the Federal Housing
   1-15  Administration; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, His love for politics prompted him to run for
   1-17  United States Representative from Oklahoma's Third District in 1947;
   1-18  he not only won the House seat but was returned to that position by
   1-19  his constituents until his retirement in 1976; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, He worked his way up to Majority Whip in 1955 and to
   1-21  Majority Leader in 1962 before becoming speaker; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Carl Albert faithfully and ably served the
   1-23  Democratic National Committee as a delegate and chair of the
    2-1  platform committee; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, A Rhodes scholar, Carl Albert received his
    2-3  bachelor's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1931 before
    2-4  furthering his education at Oxford University in England; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, A lawyer of note, Mr. Albert was a member early
    2-6  in his career of the legal department of Ohio Oil Company and an
    2-7  attorney for Sayre Oil Company and the law firm of
    2-8  Arnote and Arnote; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, His career was temporarily interrupted by
   2-10  World War II and he entered the United States Army as a private
   2-11  in the Judge Advocate General Department in 1941; before his
   2-12  retirement in 1946 Mr. Albert had advanced to the rank of
   2-13  Lieutenant Colonel; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, Various honors and awards have been bestowed on
   2-15  Carl Albert, including the Heart of the Year Award, Old Saint
   2-16  George's Award, and Minute Man of the Year award; and
   2-17        WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to have the opportunity
   2-18  to express its gratitude to this eminent American; now, therefore,
   2-19  be it
   2-20        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-21  73rd Legislature, hereby send warm personal greetings to
   2-22  Carl Bert Albert from the people of Texas and the citizens of
   2-23  Austin and recognize him as an Honorary Texan with all attendant
   2-24  rights and privileges thereof; and, be it further
   2-25        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
    3-1  him as an expression of the best wishes and high regard of the
    3-2  Texas Senate.
