No. 137 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Recognized as a young, progressive community, Odessa 1-3 is a city with an eye on the future; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Located in the state's leading oil-producing county, 1-5 Odessa is considered the center for oil field operations and 1-6 petro-chemical production for the Permian Basin; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The City of Odessa is also a center for agricultural 1-8 businesses in the region engaged in beef cattle, poultry, pecans, 1-9 and hay operations; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Two exceptional institutions of higher learning are 1-11 found within the city: The University of Texas of the Permian 1-12 Basin, which has expanded its educational offerings to four-year 1-13 programs in fields ranging from art to land management; and 1-14 Odessa College, a community college which specializes in a variety 1-15 of liberal arts and vocational-technical training; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Along with its vital energy and agricultural, 1-17 business, medical, and educational opportunities, this outstanding 1-18 Permian Basin city is also a cultural, entertainment, and recreation 1-19 center with: The Globe of the Great Southwest, a replica of 1-20 Shakespeare's original Globe Theater; the Presidential Museum, 1-21 dedicated to commemorating the office of the presidency and all the 1-22 men who have served in this office; the Art Institute for the 1-23 Permian Basin; the Permian Playhouse, ranked as one of the 10 best 2-1 community theaters in the nation in 1991; and the Odessa Chuck Wagon 2-2 Gang, which has promoted Odessa's unique hospitality and Texan cuisine 2-3 since 1940; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The citizens of Odessa and the surrounding region 2-5 are to be commended on such noteworthy annual events as the 2-6 Shakespeare Festival, Renaissance Fair, and Permian Basin Fair 2-7 and Expo; and 2-8 WHEREAS, This fine city also boasts the second largest meteor 2-9 crater in the United States, located just west of the city; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Odessa is a dynamic, ambitious city, representative 2-11 of the spirit of Texas, and it is appropriate that the Texas Senate 2-12 recognize the citizens of this outstanding community for their 2-13 numerous contributions and accomplishments; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-15 73rd Legislature, hereby recognize February 3, 1993, as "Odessa Day" 2-16 and welcome the Odessa delegation to the State Capitol; and, be it 2-17 further 2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared 2-19 for the City of Odessa in recognition of this special occasion and 2-20 as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 2-21 _____________________________________ 2-22 President of the Senate 2-23 I hereby certify that the 2-24 above Resolution was adopted by 2-25 the Senate on February 3, 1993. 3-1 _____________________________________ 3-2 Secretary of the Senate 3-3 _____________________________________ 3-4 Member, Texas Senate
