    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Texas Department of Health has a duty
    1-3  to the citizens and taxpayers of this state to do everything
    1-4  in its power to ensure that its many responsibilities are carried
    1-5  out as efficiently as possible with available resources, and much
    1-6  can be achieved toward this goal by the department's forming a
    1-7  partnership with the private sector to better serve the public; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Because of a recently documented increase
    1-9  in neural tube birth defects in the Rio Grande Valley,
   1-10  the Texas Department of Health recommends that all women of
   1-11  childbearing age in Cameron and Hidalgo counties supplement their
   1-12  diets with folic acid, a B vitamin, which studies show may reduce
   1-13  the incidence of such defects; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, CIBA-GEIGY Pharmaceuticals Division contributed
   1-15  $7,500 to help with the cost of a Texas Department of Health
   1-16  media campaign to educate the public about folic acid, first in
   1-17  the Rio Grande Valley and then in other parts of the state; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, The success of this project will help reduce the
   1-19  risk of neural tube defects in the state; now, therefore, be it
   1-20        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   1-21  73rd Legislature, hereby commend CIBA-GEIGY Pharmaceuticals
   1-22  Division for its outstanding work on behalf of the health and
   1-23  welfare of the people of Texas; and, be it further
    2-1        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
    2-2  for CIBA-GEIGY Pharmaceuticals Division as an expression of
    2-3  the appreciation of the Texas Senate.
