    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes singular
    1-3  pleasure in recognizing the Museum of the Southwest on the grand
    1-4  occasion of its 25th anniversary in the Turner Mansion; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, One of Midland's most important cultural and
    1-6  educational institutions, Turner Museum was incorporated in
    1-7  September, 1965, following a commitment by the Junior League of
    1-8  Midland to provide $55,000 over a five-year period for the
    1-9  establishment of a museum focusing on history, science, and art;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Placed in two temporary locations in 1966, the
   1-12  museum moved to its permanent home in 1968; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Dedicated to the preservation of Southwestern art
   1-14  and culture, the museum, housed in the handsome estate of an early
   1-15  Midland ranching and oil family, covers an entire landscaped city
   1-16  block; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Recognized as a national historic landmark and
   1-18  included on the National Register of Historic Places, the Turner
   1-19  Mansion was built in 1934 as the home of a successful oil,
   1-20  ranching, and horse breeding couple, Fred and Juliette Turner; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Through the generosity of Turner family heirs,
   1-22  Dorothy Turner Scharbauer and Fredda Turner Durham, the Turner
   1-23  Mansion became the permanent home of the museum; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Exhibits feature historical and contemporary
    2-2  Southwestern art including painting, sculpture, ceramics, and
    2-3  Indian artifacts, as well as special exhibits; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Over the past 25 years, expansions to the museum
    2-5  complex have included additional gallery space, administrative and
    2-6  meeting facilities, the Blakemore Planetarium, and the children's
    2-7  museum; now, therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  73rd Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to all those who
   2-10  have been responsible for the development of the Turner Museum
   2-11  into a primary attraction for residents, visitors, and area school
   2-12  students for the promotion of culture, education, and the arts;
   2-13  and, be it further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
   2-15  memento of this important milestone with all best wishes for a most
   2-16  successful anniversary celebration from the Texas Senate.
