    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                            J. Wayne Stark
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with the
    1-6  family and many friends of J. Wayne Stark in mourning his death on
    1-7  January 18, 1993; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, This renowned administrator served as the director
    1-9  of the Texas A&M University Memorial Student Center for 33 years;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Mr. Stark graduated from high school in
   1-12  Winters, Texas, and earned a bachelor's degree in history from
   1-13  Texas A&M University in 1939; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, An aspiring law student at The University of Texas
   1-15  School of Law, he withdrew from school in order to join the
   1-16  United States Army, serving with distinction in the European
   1-17  Theater during World War II; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, In 1947, J. Wayne Stark joined the Texas A&M
   1-19  University staff as director of the Memorial Student Center; his
   1-20  first task was overseeing the construction of the center; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, The Memorial Student Center is now recognized
   1-22  as having the largest student activities program of its type
   1-23  in the world; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, A real pioneer in his field, Mr. Stark developed
    2-2  the Opera and Performing Arts Society and the Student Conference
    2-3  on National Affairs and the Great Issues and Political Forum
    2-4  programs; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, A cultured and erudite gentleman, J. Wayne Stark
    2-6  was also active in various arts and civic activities in the
    2-7  College Station-Bryan area as well as throughout Texas; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, One of the most influential men ever to serve
    2-9  Texas A&M University, Mr. Stark was retired from the
   2-10  United States Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel; he was also a
   2-11  former president of the Association of College Unions-International;
   2-12  and
   2-13        WHEREAS, His wise counsel and good judgment will be greatly
   2-14  missed and remembered with gratitude by those whose lives he
   2-15  touched; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, Unquestionably a man of high principles and
   2-17  moral integrity, his passing is mourned by all who knew him; now,
   2-18  therefore, be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-20  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members
   2-21  of his family:  his wife, Jean; and his children, John and Sally;
   2-22  and, be it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-24  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
   2-25  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
    3-1  it do so in memory of J. Wayne Stark.
