    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Cemeteries are important links to our past and
    1-3  their maintenance and preservation are a source of pride for families
    1-4  whose loved ones are buried there as well as citizens who appreciate
    1-5  their historical significance; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Located on the Brazos River in Fort Bend County,
    1-7  Richmond is built on the site of the earliest settlement by members
    1-8  of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred in 1822 and is the home of
    1-9  two of the oldest cemeteries in the state, Morton Cemetery and
   1-10  Meyer-Dyer Cemetery; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge, the Morton
   1-12  Cemetery is lovingly cared for by volunteers; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, One such dedicated individual who has been cleaning
   1-14  monuments and making sure the grounds are well kept in the Morton
   1-15  Cemetery is George Reading; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Mr. Reading has also voluntarily taken on the
   1-17  responsibility of cleaning the smaller, private Meyer-Dyer
   1-18  Cemetery; under his careful guidance, leaves have been removed and
   1-19  debris cleared to beautify the grounds; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The oldest gravestone in the Meyer-Dyer Cemetery
   1-21  belongs to Wiley Martin who fought in battles in Texas in the early
   1-22  1800s and was buried in the 1840s; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, The cemetery has been used as recently as 1961, when
    2-1  Heard Dyer was buried among family members; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Mr. Reading's generosity and concern for his city
    2-3  have been of great benefit to the citizens of Richmond, and the
    2-4  esteemed individual has earned the admiration and respect of the
    2-5  entire community; now, therefore, be it
    2-6        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-7  73rd Legislature, hereby commend George Reading for his hard
    2-8  work and dedication in maintaining and improving the Morton and
    2-9  Meyer-Dyer cemeteries, thus preserving these important graveyards
   2-10  for generations to come; and, be it further
   2-11        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-12  Mr. Reading as an expression of the admiration and appreciation
   2-13  of the Texas Senate.
