By: Brown S.R. No. 236 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 James S. Nabors 1-5 WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow that the Texas Senate 1-6 noted the passing of one of the state's most eminent citizens, 1-7 James S. Nabors of Brazosport, who died February 4, 1993, at the 1-8 age of 69; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The highly respected newspaperman was widely 1-10 known for his devotion to excellence and to the community he so 1-11 masterfully served; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The former publisher of The Brazosport Facts will 1-13 be remembered as a caring civic leader who worked diligently for 1-14 numerous worthwhile community projects; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Born in Talladega, Alabama, in 1923, the former 1-16 Marine served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II 1-17 and saw action at Iwo Jima, Saipan, and the Marshall Islands; he 1-18 graduated from the University of Alabama and landed his first 1-19 newspaper job with the Birmingham News; and 1-20 WHEREAS, His success as a circulation manager led to a 1-21 position on the Baytown Sun working under the late Fred Hartman 1-22 until he became publisher of The Brazosport Facts; and 1-23 WHEREAS, When Mr. Nabors was designated publisher of the 2-1 financially troubled publication in 1957, the circulation had 2-2 dropped to around 2,000 and he undertook the task of making his 2-3 paper the best daily newspaper of its size in Texas; and 2-4 WHEREAS, A crusader who campaigned for many worthwhile 2-5 causes, Mr. Nabors firmly believed that the newspaper had an 2-6 obligation to inform the public about needed community improvements; 2-7 and 2-8 WHEREAS, Whether enlightening the public of medical 2-9 malpractice suits or supporting a candidate for president of the 2-10 United States, Jim Nabors believed in presenting news and 2-11 advertising in a professional manner and setting an example of good 2-12 citizenship; and 2-13 WHEREAS, In 1974, Mr. Nabors was named Outstanding Citizen 2-14 of Brazosport by the Chamber of Commerce for his efforts to instill 2-15 a sense of cooperation among area cities and their governments and 2-16 for his dedication on behalf of the Brazosport Center for the Arts 2-17 and Sciences; and 2-18 WHEREAS, James Nabors leaves behind a legacy of fairness, 2-19 compassion, and integrity, and it is appropriate for the Texas Senate 2-20 to honor the memory of this respected and beloved individual; now, 2-21 therefore, be it 2-22 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-23 73rd Legislature, hereby express sincere condolences to the bereaved 2-24 family of James S. Nabors: his wife, Eleanor; and his daughters, 2-25 Susan Warren, Martha Hoy, Amy Crosby, and Elizabeth Maroney; and, 3-1 be it further 3-2 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-3 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from 3-4 the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do 3-5 so in memory of James S.
