No. 237 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize George Cruz for his 44 years of loyal service with 1-4 James Coney Island in Houston; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Born on a farm in Brenham, Texas, Mr. Cruz spent 1-6 his early years in Oklahoma and in Fort Bend County, Texas, and 1-7 joined the United States Army in 1942; and 1-8 WHEREAS, While serving in the army, he was a paratrooper, 1-9 jumping into France during the invasion of Normandy; he was wounded 1-10 twice and has two purple hearts, a bronze star, and two Presidential 1-11 Citations for bravery; and 1-12 WHEREAS, George Cruz began working at James Coney Island 1-13 of downtown Houston in 1949 at the age of 29 and soon became a 1-14 legend in the business; and 1-15 WHEREAS, A popular personality and a hardworking employee, 1-16 George Cruz long ago became a vital part of James Coney Island, 1-17 and over the years, he has played a major role in the restaurant's 1-18 success; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Committed to pleasing his customers and 1-20 enthusiastically giving them his personal attention, George Cruz 1-21 has made longtime friends with people who live in the area as well 1-22 as across the state, and his presence at the restaurant is truly 1-23 treasured by its many faithful patrons; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-2 73rd Legislature, hereby commend George Cruz for his contributions 2-3 to the Houston community and to James Coney Island and extend best 2-4 wishes to him for the future; and, be it further 2-5 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-6 him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. 2-7 _____________________________________ 2-8 President of the Senate 2-9 I hereby certify that the 2-10 above Resolution was adopted by 2-11 the Senate on February 16, 1993. 2-12 _____________________________________ 2-13 Secretary of the Senate 2-14 _____________________________________ 2-15 Member, Texas Senate
