    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The townsite of Mount Vernon, Washington County, Texas,
    1-3  will receive an Official Texas Historical Marker at a special ceremony
    1-4  on March 20, 1993; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The town was laid out in 1841 by John Stamp who chose
    1-6  the name hoping that it would help the town be designated as the
    1-7  county seat of Washington County; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Mount Vernon lost its official designation as
    1-9  county seat in 1844 in an election ratified by the Texas Congress;
   1-10  however, Mount Vernon did enjoy its status as county seat from 1841
   1-11  through 1844; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Even though it was no longer county seat, Mount Vernon
   1-13  remained a thriving, growing frontier town with log buildings, homes,
   1-14  a school, churches, a jail, and a courthouse; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, As late as 1860 the town was still robust;
   1-16  Gideon Lincecum of Longpoint vividly described a parade assembled to
   1-17  march from Mount Vernon to Brenham; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, The parade included two veterans of the War of 1812
   1-19  who marched to show their support for seceding from a federal union
   1-20  which no longer stood for the principles for which their ancestors
   1-21  had died; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Today, in Washington County, there are no remains of
   1-23  the town named Mount Vernon; the Texas Historical Commission seeks to
    2-1  correct that omission; now, therefore, be it
    2-2        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-3  73rd Legislature, hereby recognize Mount Vernon, Washington County,
    2-4  Texas, as it receives an Official Texas Historical Marker
    2-5  commemorating its important place in the development of the state;
    2-6  and, be it further
    2-7        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
    2-8  memento of this notable event.
