    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, In commemoration of Sam Houston's 200th birthday
    1-3  on March 2, 1993, the Texas flag flying over the Texas State Capitol,
    1-4  San Jacinto Battleground, and Washington-on-the-Brazos will be
    1-5  presented to the people of Virginia; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, A gift to Sam Houston's home state from the
    1-7  citizens of the Lone Star State, the Texas flag will be presented to
    1-8  the Rockbridge County Historical Society as a tribute to their native
    1-9  son; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Born in Timber Ridge, Rockbridge County, Virginia,
   1-11  on March 2, 1793, Sam Houston rode into Texas, then a province of
   1-12  Mexico, in 1832, settled in Nacogdoches, and practiced law; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, He was a delegate to the Texas Convention that met
   1-14  in Washington-on-the-Brazos where he signed the Texas Declaration
   1-15  of Independence on his 43rd birthday, March 2, 1836, and was
   1-16  subsequently elected Commander-in-Chief of the Texas Army; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Park is
   1-18  the site where Texas won its independence from Mexico on
   1-19  April 21, 1836, under the leadership of General Sam Houston whose
   1-20  ragtag army completely surprised General Santa Anna's superior
   1-21  force and routed his army in a matter of minutes; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Sam Houston, a hero to the people of his adopted
   1-23  state, served as President of the Republic for two terms, as
    2-1  United States Senator from Texas from 1846 to 1859, and as
    2-2  Governor of the State of Texas from 1859 to 1861; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, The Texas State Capitol is one of the most
    2-4  magnificent state capitol buildings in the nation and the source of
    2-5  great pride for all Texans; visitors to the state capitol in Austin
    2-6  are reminded of Sam Houston's remarkable life as they view the
    2-7  commanding marble statue of his likeness that stands majestically in
    2-8  the south hall of the building; now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-10  73rd Legislature, hereby join with the citizens of the beautiful
   2-11  State of Virginia in celebrating the 200th birthday of Sam Houston;
   2-12  and, be it further
   2-13        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-14  the Rockbridge County Historical Society as a recollection of this
   2-15  memorable day.
