By: Haley S.R. No. 250 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Simon W. Henderson, Jr. 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with the 1-6 citizens of Lufkin in mourning the loss of Simon W. Henderson, Jr., 1-7 who died on October 4, 1992; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Born and raised in Lufkin, Mr. Henderson has been 1-9 hailed as one of the last links between modern Angelina County and 1-10 its early founding days; and 1-11 WHEREAS, After attending Lufkin schools and Satterwhite 1-12 Business College, he joined his father's lumber business, Angelina 1-13 County Lumber Company; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Astute businessmen, Mr. Henderson and his father 1-15 were among the founders of the Lufkin Foundry and Machine Company, 1-16 now Lufkin Industries; Mr. Henderson was the last living founder of 1-17 Southland Paper Mills, now Champion Paper Mills, founded in the 1-18 1930s; and 1-19 WHEREAS, A great humanitarian and a highly respected civic 1-20 leader, Mr. Henderson was the last original member of the board of 1-21 trustees of Memorial Medical Center; he had played a major role in 1-22 the establishment of the hospital itself, the Cardiac Intensive 1-23 Care Unit, the Loucile Henderson Women's Wing, and the Henderson 2-1 Kidney Disease Center; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Simon Henderson's projects and activities had a 2-3 profound and widespread impact on the Lufkin community; recipient 2-4 of the Angelina Award for Distinguished Community Service in 1981, 2-5 he was chairman of the board of directors of Lufkin Federal Savings 2-6 and Loan, director of the Angelina and Neches River Railroad, past 2-7 president of the Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, and the first 2-8 president of the Angelina County Community Chest; and 2-9 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, courage, forthrightness, and 2-10 generosity, he gave unselfishly of his time to others; and 2-11 WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mr. Henderson was an active 2-12 member of the First United Methodist Church and on the board of 2-13 trustees at Methodist Hospital in Houston and Lon Morris College 2-14 in Jacksonville; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Simon Henderson was an exemplary gentleman who lived 2-16 his life to the fullest, and his presence in the Lufkin community 2-17 will be deeply missed; and 2-18 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband and father who leaves 2-19 behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and 2-20 many friends; now, therefore, be it 2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-22 73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members 2-23 of his family: his wife, Loucile Johnson Henderson; his children, 2-24 Irma Veree Alexander, Virginia Winston, Elizabeth Louise Page, 2-25 Laura Sue McMurrey, and Simon Wood Henderson III; and, be 3-1 it further 3-2 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 3-3 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 3-4 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 3-5 in memory of Simon W.
