    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize Trinity United Methodist Church on the grand occasion
    1-4  of its 128th anniversary; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, On March 2, 1843, on a small lot in Houston, a
    1-6  cornerstone was laid for the first brick church in Texas; records
    1-7  show that blacks and whites worshipped together in this Methodist
    1-8  church; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, In 1848, an African Mission was organized; after the
   1-10  formation of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, a small wooden
   1-11  building was built on the northwest corner of Milam in 1851; both
   1-12  Methodists and Baptists worshipped there; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, On March 5, 1865, some members of the small mission
   1-14  church and their preacher, Elias Dribble, held a meeting at the
   1-15  house of Richard Brock in order to organize a church; the small
   1-16  wooden building was moved, and plans were made for the building to
   1-17  be named Trinity Methodist Church; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Due to the guidance and wise stewardship of its
   1-19  pastors and the leadership of the current pastor, the
   1-20  Reverend Robert E. McGee, the church and its ministry have
   1-21  continued to grow and to undertake invaluable projects in the
   1-22  community; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, The celebration of its 128th anniversary is an
    2-1  expression of the church's enduring commitment to its holy mission
    2-2  and its dedication to tradition and unity among Christians; now,
    2-3  therefore, be it
    2-4        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-5  73rd Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and
    2-6  members of Trinity United Methodist Church on the jubilant occasion
    2-7  of its 128th anniversary; and, be it further
    2-8        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
    2-9  church as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
