    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Velda Leyerle of Bryan, Texas, retired from her
    1-3  position at Wal-Mart on January 31, 1993, bringing to a close an
    1-4  exceptional career in retail that spanned over 70 years; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Friends and co-workers of the beloved employee
    1-6  honored her with a retirement party on January 22, 1993, and
    1-7  presented her with a new blue smock covered with greetings
    1-8  inscribed by them expressing their warm sentiments for her; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The octogenarian began her lifelong career in her
   1-10  father's grocery store during World War I; the six-year-old helped
   1-11  shelve merchandise in the family's store near Limon, Colorado, when
   1-12  chewing tobacco was 10 cents a plug; gasoline was delivered to the
   1-13  store in 50-gallon barrels and sold in one-gallon cans; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, After her marriage to Walter Leyerle, she and her
   1-15  husband bought a community grocery store that also served as the
   1-16  local post office; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Through the years the couple also operated a
   1-18  hardware store in Johnstown, Colorado, and a motel in
   1-19  San Bernardino, California; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, In 1976 Mr. and Mrs. Leyerle moved to
   1-21  Bryan-College Station where three of their four children lived;
   1-22  after the death of her husband, Mrs. Leyerle ran the Karmel Korn
   1-23  outlet at Manor East Mall until 1985, when the energetic
    2-1  73-year-old started working at Wal-Mart; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Truly deserving of a long and rewarding retirement,
    2-3  Mrs. Leyerle is looking forward to joining the Blue Bonnet Quilt
    2-4  Club and sewing for her six grandchildren and three
    2-5  great-grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
    2-6        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-7  73rd Legislature, hereby recognize Velda Leyerle and express its
    2-8  deep admiration for her with all best wishes for many happy
    2-9  retirement years; and, be it further
   2-10        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
   2-11  as a memento of this important milestone in her remarkable life.
