S.R. No. 302 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The City of Palestine enjoys a reputation as one 1-3 of the most vibrant and progressive communities in the rich 1-4 agricultural and commercial region of East Texas; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Ideally situated between the Neches and Trinity 1-6 rivers, the area around Palestine attracted many early settlers who 1-7 were drawn by the fertile soils of the post oak savannah and the 1-8 abundant timber of the pine woods; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Among these original settlers was the family of 1-10 Daniel Parker, who came to Texas in 1833 from Palestine, Illinois; 1-11 members of this pioneer family established several early settlements 1-12 in the area, including a new community they named after the family's 1-13 former home; and 1-14 WHEREAS, When Anderson County was organized in 1846, the 1-15 town of Palestine occupied the geographical center of the new county 1-16 and was chosen as the county seat; the county's first courthouse was 1-17 erected in Palestine the following year; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Served by the International-Great Northern and the 1-19 Texas and New Orleans railroads, Palestine became an early market 1-20 and distribution point for the rapidly growing agricultural district 1-21 surrounding it; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Today, the modern city of Palestine continues to 1-23 be a thriving commercial center, deriving its prosperity from a 2-1 diverse economic base that includes manufacturing, agriculture, 2-2 and shipping industries; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Adding to the exceptional quality of 2-4 life to be found in Palestine are the community's excellent 2-5 educational facilities at Trinity Valley Community College, the 2-6 superb recreational opportunities for water sports at nearby Lake 2-7 Palestine, and several historic points of interest; and 2-8 WHEREAS, The Dogwood Trails Festival, held each March 2-9 when the dogwood trees are in full bloom, is one of the community's 2-10 biggest social events and one that attracts delighted visitors from 2-11 across the state; and 2-12 WHEREAS, The citizens of Palestine understandably take 2-13 great pride in celebrating the virtues of life in East Texas, and 2-14 it gives the members of this legislative body great pleasure to 2-15 join with these fellow Texans in saluting their community; now, 2-16 therefore, be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 73rd Legislature, hereby recognize February 23, 1993, as 2-19 Palestine Day at the Texas Capitol and extend best wishes to all 2-20 of its citizens on this noteworthy occasion. 2-21 Turner 2-22 Armbrister Leedom Rosson 2-23 Barrientos Lucio Shapiro 2-24 Bivins Luna Shelley 2-25 Brown Madla Sibley 3-1 Carriker Moncrief Sims 3-2 Ellis Montford Truan 3-3 Haley Nelson Wentworth 3-4 Harris of Dallas Parker West 3-5 Harris of Tarrant Patterson Whitmire 3-6 Henderson Ratliff Zaffirini 3-7 Bullock, President of the Senate 3-8 _____________________________________ 3-9 President of the Senate 3-10 I hereby certify that the 3-11 above Resolution was adopted by 3-12 the Senate on February 23, 1993. 3-13 _____________________________________ 3-14 Secretary of the Senate 3-15 _____________________________________ 3-16 Member, Texas Senate
