No. 306 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas recognizes the 1-3 month of March, 1993, as National Mental Retardation Awareness 1-4 Month; and 1-5 WHEREAS, People with mental retardation constitute one 1-6 of America's largest groups having disabilities, and one of every 1-7 10 Americans has a family member with mental retardation; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Mental retardation cuts across the lines of race, 1-9 education, and social and economic background; hereditary causes 1-10 are known to account for only a fraction of the cases of 1-11 retardation; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The Thomas Care Center in Houston will commemorate 1-13 National Mental Retardation Awareness Month with a luncheon; the 1-14 Thomas Care Center is operated by Living Centers of America, 1-15 Incorporated, the fourth largest provider of long-term health 1-16 care in the United States; and 1-17 WHEREAS, People in communities across Texas should be 1-18 educated about the abilities and needs of people with mental 1-19 retardation; mental retardation is not a disease and should 1-20 never be confused with mental illness; now, therefore, be it 1-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 1-22 73rd Legislature, hereby commend the Thomas Care Center for its 1-23 illustrious service to the mentally retarded citizens of Texas 2-1 and for its excellent staff of professionals who have dedicated 2-2 their services to these clients; and, be it further 2-3 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-4 the Thomas Care Center as a token of the high regard of the 2-5 Texas Senate. 2-6 _____________________________________ 2-7 President of the Senate 2-8 I hereby certify that the 2-9 above Resolution was adopted by 2-10 the Senate on February 24, 1993. 2-11 _____________________________________ 2-12 Secretary of the Senate 2-13 _____________________________________ 2-14 Member, Texas Senate
