    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                         Jewell Heard Whitlow
    1-5        WHEREAS, The death of well-known community leader
    1-6  Jewell Heard Whitlow of Refugio, Texas, on February 15, 1993, was
    1-7  deeply mourned by the residents of the city; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The beloved individual was a devoted wife, mother,
    1-9  and friend who leaves behind lasting memories of love and compassion;
   1-10  and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Her warmth, helpfulness, and generosity of spirit
   1-12  endeared her to all those fortunate enough to know her; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, A native of Refugio, Mrs. Whitlow was the daughter
   1-14  of Thomas and Josephine Lacoste Heard, and she was actively involved
   1-15  in the business and civic life of the community throughout her life;
   1-16  and
   1-17        WHEREAS, After attending Our Lady of the Lake College and
   1-18  Texas A&I University, she married Douglas A. Whitlow in 1947; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, A highly respected and successful businesswoman,
   1-20  she was the retired owner and manager of Heard and Heard Trucking
   1-21  Company and a rancher; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, In devoting much of her time to the betterment of
   1-23  her community, the esteemed lady achieved recognition in her work
    2-1  with the Schoenstatt Movement in South Texas; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Mrs. Whitlow was a member of
    2-3  Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church where she was a liturgical
    2-4  minister and served with the Altar Society; she also founded the
    2-5  Girl Scouts in her parish and established a day care center; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, She leaves a legacy of compassion and commitment
    2-7  that will remain cherished by those who lived and worked with her;
    2-8  now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-10  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the family
   2-11  members of Jewell Heard Whitlow:  her daughters, Jonette Childs
   2-12  and Julie Pond; her sons, Joel, James, Jack, Jerry, and Jeff Whitlow;
   2-13  and her 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and, be it
   2-14  further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-16  the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
   2-17  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
   2-18  it do so in memory of Jewell Heard Whitlow.
