    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
    1-3  pleasure in welcoming the members of the Student Government
    1-4  Association of Stephen F. Austin State University and distinguished
    1-5  citizens of Nacogdoches who are visiting the state capitol on
    1-6  February 24, 1993; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, The Student Government Association of
    1-8  Stephen F. Austin is sponsoring a "Ride for Education" to commend
    1-9  legislators from around the state for their time-honored support
   1-10  of higher education; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Students, administrators, faculty, and staff of
   1-12  Stephen F. Austin State University and government, business, and
   1-13  civic leaders have traveled to Austin to communicate higher
   1-14  education's needs to the state's elected officials; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The largest single local employer, the university
   1-16  is located at the site of one of the earliest Spanish settlements,
   1-17  founded in July, 1719, near a large Indian colony; from its
   1-18  frontier origin, Nacogdoches has grown into a beautiful modern city
   1-19  that cherishes its historic beginnings; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Established as a teachers college in 1921,
   1-21  Stephen F. Austin State University increased its enrollment
   1-22  dramatically following World War II, and a broader range of
   1-23  courses was added to meet the demands of the student veterans;
    2-1  in 1969, by legislative action, the college became a university;
    2-2  and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges
    2-4  and Schools, Stephen F. Austin is a comprehensive regional
    2-5  university enrolling 27,000 students each year and provides a wide
    2-6  range of undergraduate and graduate programs as well as a wide
    2-7  variety of human service programs; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, Situated in a residential setting unique among
    2-9  the state's comprehensive institutions, Stephen F. Austin has
   2-10  maintained its character as a student-oriented educational
   2-11  institution that offers a level of excellence in academic and
   2-12  student-life activities; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Dedicated to the pursuit of truth and to the
   2-14  enhancement of the quality of life for all those it serves,
   2-15  Stephen F. Austin State University is an intellectual, cultural,
   2-16  and educational resource of great distinction; now, therefore,
   2-17  be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-19  73rd Legislature, hereby declare February 24, 1993,
   2-20  "Stephen F. Austin State University Day" and extend a most cordial
   2-21  welcome to the visitors from Nacogdoches, wishing them each an
   2-22  enjoyable and successful stay in the state's capital city.
