    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                         Marilyn Keaton Newsom
    1-5        WHEREAS, The death of Mrs. Marilyn Keaton Newsom on
    1-6  December 26, 1992, represented a deep personal loss to her loved
    1-7  ones and many friends throughout the State of Texas; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Born in Big Spring, the daughter of Herbert and
    1-9  Martha Keaton, Mrs. Newsom graduated from Tarleton State College,
   1-10  Texas Christian University, and Harris College of Nursing; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mrs. Newsom was a lifelong
   1-12  member of the First United Methodist Church and had sung in the
   1-13  choir since she was 10 years old; she performed with the Living
   1-14  Christmas Tree at the church for the last 12 years; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, A serious student of music and voice, Mrs. Newsom
   1-16  studied voice with Mrs. James Frazier; Marilyn Keaton performed
   1-17  two summers in the Dallas Starlight Opera before graduating
   1-18  from college, and she returned to Big Spring and married her
   1-19  husband, Don Newsom, in 1949; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Mrs. Newsom's commitment to her community and her
   1-21  music increased through the years; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Active in civic and community affairs, Mrs. Newsom
   1-23  had been named Volunteer of the Year for Big Spring State Hospital
    2-1  and was selected as Woman of the Year by the Big Spring Area
    2-2  Chamber of Commerce; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, A beloved citizen of Big Spring, she generously
    2-4  donated her time to Big Spring State Hospital, the United Way of
    2-5  Big Spring/Howard County, the Young Men's Christian Association,
    2-6  and Canterbury Retirement Center; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, An inspiration to all who knew her, Mrs. Newsom
    2-8  exhibited beauty, strength of character, and purpose; these
    2-9  qualities were readily apparent to all; now, therefore, be it
   2-10        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-11  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to her bereaved
   2-12  family:  her husband, Don Newsom; her sons, Kent Newsom and
   2-13  Dr. Gary Newsom; her sister, Margy Ledbetter; and her grandchildren,
   2-14  Keaton Newsom and Brittany Newsom; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-16  the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
   2-17  the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
   2-18  do so in memory of Marilyn Keaton Newsom.
