    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                         Dr. Gregorio Canales
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with
    1-6  the citizens of San Antonio in mourning the death of
    1-7  Dr. Gregorio Canales who died on February 27, 1993; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Born in Hebbronville in 1919, Gregorio Canales
    1-9  worked hard as a young man in order to finance his college
   1-10  education; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Graduating from The University of Texas
   1-12  Medical Branch at Galveston in 1944, Dr. Canales served
   1-13  in the United States Army Medical Corps for two years; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, After his tour of duty, Dr. Canales opened a private
   1-15  practice for two years and then served an orthopedic residency for
   1-16  three years; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, When polio became widespread in the 1950s, Dr. Canales
   1-18  worked tirelessly with many children who had contracted the disease;
   1-19  and
   1-20        WHEREAS, In private practice in San Antonio from 1958 until
   1-21  his retirement in 1986, Dr. Canales continually traveled to large
   1-22  cities to observe new medical procedures in order to improve his
   1-23  medical knowledge; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Active in expanding the services of the Santa Rosa
    2-2  Children's Hospital, Dr. Canales was an associate clinical professor
    2-3  in orthopedic surgery at The University of Texas Health Science
    2-4  Center for 20 years; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, A generous man who donated much of his time to
    2-6  charity, Dr. Canales was especially active on behalf of the
    2-7  Westside Catholic School Fund; this noteworthy fund which his
    2-8  daughter, Francine Garza-Vale, founded last year was established
    2-9  to give disadvantaged children a chance to escape urban gang
   2-10  activity and receive a good Catholic education; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, A dedicated and diligent man of medicine, Dr. Canales
   2-12  left a lasting standard of excellence for others to follow; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Dr. Canales's wise counsel and good judgment will be
   2-14  remembered with gratitude by all who knew him; now, therefore, be it
   2-15        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-16  73rd Legislature, hereby extend heartfelt condolences to the
   2-17  members of his family:  his wife, Amelia Canales; his daughters,
   2-18  Francine Garza-Vale, Cristina Canales, Amelia Sondgeroth,
   2-19  Maria Magdalena Canales, and Mapi Helm; his sons, Luis Canales
   2-20  and Gregorio Canales; his sister, Maria Sanchez de la Fuente;
   2-21  his brother, Joel Canales; and his 11 grandchildren; and, be
   2-22  it further
   2-23        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-24  members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
   2-25  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
    3-1  in memory of Dr. Gregorio Canales.
